RUCKUS! How to get all your music for free...Legally.

Are you a student, teacher, or alumni?

Ruckus is the place to go for thousands upon thousands of 100% free albums and songs, from pretty much every artist! Access is only granted to those with a .edu email, so you have to be a student, or alumni or teacher.

I just signed up, and it is amazing. The only catch is that you have to use their "Ruckus Player" which you download, to play the music. That's ok, because it is structured a lot like iTunes. I just downloaded about ten albums in a matter of seconds.

Check it out!

Taken form thier site:

"the music-encryption required by the record companies that makes subscription music possible does not work with non-Windows operating systems"

that kills it for me, I'm on a mac :( sounded promising

Digital "Rights" Management (DRM) is evil.

This service may be free as in beer, but it certainly isn't free as in freedom...

I have no problem paying for what I use, but I expect to be able to use it. Using a service like this simply encourages the music industry to use DRM on music that' actually for sale.

The only reason I use Ruckus is because I am on my computer a lot, so I'm listening to it through one program or another, at least this way I can listen to all the music I want, and have full access to albums and songs without paying a dime. When I need to get something to go, like on my iPod, that is what iTunes is for.

Yeah.....one of these days people on boards will be saying "Go to [site name]! You can watch all the movies you want, and not pay a dime!"

The idea of "I just listen to the music when I'm at my computer" is sort of like saying "I just watch movies when I'm at my TV."

Why should people go to the trouble and expense of making music or movies or anything else if they're not going to be able to make a living doing it?

I don't get it. Either way the artists aren't getting paid, so how is this any morally different from downloading music illegally? I think I'll stick with limewire.

The artists aren't losing money it's the labels.

And just so you know, the labels hate you.

Oh, and they wouldn't be losing money if they would have simply listened to what the consumers wanted and provided it. Instead they cling to an outdated business model that made them (not tthe artists) filthy rich.

I think that web sites like the ones offering free music are great. Let the advertsers pay the labels. If you want to support the artist mail them a check or go see their live show.

Exactly, great point Rook. The bands and labels aren't being robbed, sites like Ruckus work because advertisers can pay the price, literally.
