RR 10 Minute Film School.

J.R. Hudson

Spirit Animal
Rented and watched ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO. It was okaaaaaaaaayyyy.

What I ded enjoy was the FEATURETTES:

10 Minute Flick School
Inside TROUBLEMAKER STUDIOS
10 Minute Cooking School.

Good Stuff. I love his 'take' on all things film. Very enlightening and motivating. What really grabbed me was INSIDE the studios, er, his ****ing house. Oh - My- God, Becky.

Dude. that sooooo needs to be my DEN.

Anyway...

Re: RR 10 Minute Film School.

Yeah, I have read Rebel without a Crew about 20 times (i have 2 copies)...it really gets me going. RR truely embodies my philosophy of DIY for good and bad.

Also the combined DVD with El Mariachi and Desperado has excellent RR Film school info/stuff.

I don't really like his films but his approach to the process and execution of his ideas are inpirational.
Bedhead is a great short.

Re: RR 10 Minute Film School.

Saw "Mexico" on the big screen. It was by far the best-looking example of video-to-film that I've seen yet. The movie was what it was, sure, but I wasn't so interested in that as in seeing what the latest CineAlta-to-35mm project would look like. I thought SWEPII looked simply horrid when transferred to film, and it looked simply horrific off a 1280 x 720 digital projector... like watching a movie through a screen door... and "28 Days Later" looked like someone had smeared vaseline directly on my eyeballs, it was so soft and out of focus... so "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" was a big test. And it passed with flying colors. I doubt anyone, who didn't know beforehand, would have been able to tell that it was shot on video rather than film. There were a few video-like scenes, but the vast majority was perfectly acceptable. Sure, film would have had better latitude and been a little sharper, but there comes a point when it's "acceptable", and "Mexico" hit that point.

Re: RR 10 Minute Film School.

I enjoyed OUATIM when I saw it. I also thought it looked really good in the theaters. I was impressed when i found out that he was the DP on that movie and shot all the footage himself. I've read Rebel without a Crew about 5 times too and find it to be a big inspiration.

Re: RR 10 Minute Film School.

While I don't always love RR movies I love his attitude. Which is basically, pick up a camera, shoot, and learn.

I have seen so many friends spend years reading book after book, and talking endlessly about projects that never come to fruition.

RR is a wonderful kick in the arse for many and he is certainly an inspiration for me.

Re: RR 10 Minute Film School.

:) , the only thing i would like to add, is that when i watched once upon a time i DIDNT know what it was shot on (at the time) and was shocked about it when i found out(later) that it was HD, soo all those nightmare / boogy man stories about how bad HD is really nothing more than film heads who are still afraid to "test the water" ,,

Basically the average Joe doenst know/ care about wether its 35 or HD , aslong as it looks pretty, and i think the "pretty" threshold is surpassed by HD

(Ok, ok without blowing again into the never ending subject of HD vs Film, final, absolute bottom line is:- (A) Film is better than HD (AT PRESNENT, IN TECHNICAL TERMS) (B) DIGITAL VIDEO WILL EQUAL OR SURPASS FILM QUALITY (EVENTUALLY) --FACTS) 8)

Re: RR 10 Minute Film School.

I couldnt agree any less. Digital will surpass film stock. PERIOD. Its inevitable. Its forward thinking. Its technology.

The ultimate is being able to see in REAL TIME exactly what you are getting.

Re: RR 10 Minute Film School.

Robert Rodriguez is living my dream. He makes pretty much whatever he wants, in his own backyard, with all of his friends. He hands over the product to the studios, and they distribute them. My goal is to get the same thing going here in the Las Vegas area, and I'm hoping that the DVX100 will be a big help in getting that ball rolling.
