And Ebert doesn't like the star system, huh? So he uses the thumb system instead. I agree, much more reliable. ????

Also from his review (If you use your imagination, I think this applies)

"To be global, to make a film that plays everywhere, you have to be slightly stupid."

In context to reviewing with Thumbs - People are dumb and lazy.

Thumbs it is!

Hell, I freakin' love "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls!" I guess you guys don't have a thing for camp. The last act of that movie is total outrageous mayhem. Russ Meyer R.I.P. I guess to each his own. Maybe I've watched it too many times in an altered state.

sounds like someone just doesn't like roger ebert because his opinions don't fall in line with your own..

The thing he does better than any other reviewer, is review a film based on it's own merits.. something few critics do.. that and he has said numerous times how he hates the star system for rating movies... which if you read his reviews you can see how this conflicts.

personally he generally falls in line with my own opinions of film, not all the time but most..

Loki, it's not so much that I don't like Ebert because he doesn't agree with me (whether or not you were refering to my post specifically), it's that I think he DOES agree with me that, for instance, the Longest Yard is a temple of mediocrity. He seems to think that its target audience is satisfied enough with mediocrity. The movie lived up to that expectation - so, hey, thumbs up for mediocrity! It's that attitude that keeps hollywood churning out big budget films based on stale formulas and/or uninspired celebrity vehicles. It's the reason that VERY few of us aspiring or working filmmakers here on this board will ever see a theatrical release of our work.

I actually think Ebert is an intelligent critic, but I think his "market relativism" approach to criticism contributes to the constant fluff that dominates hollywood and makes success for indies even more difficult.

Why is this thread of any importance at all.

Dear God....you people actually care what someone else says about a film, personal opinion submitted to committee......

Lemmings please line up to the left, the bus to the cliff is filling fast....

Here hhheee iiissss, Mmmiistter Suuuperrior!

Pookie, you've never had any interest in a film review? Friends opinions? You think criticism and mass media (of which film is a part) has no effect on the market and/or distribution of film? I'm very impressed, however, by your rugged independence. **&&%ing sexy!

Haha whilst Im a Jackie Chan fan and a Hugh Jackman (fellow Aussie) fan, this movie blew more than a John Holmes movie. I dont know this guy I assume he is well known in the states... but he must have dementia.
