Rotoscoping color

Hey guys and gals,

Had a question about rotoscoping and color correction. I just got back from watching 300 directed by Zack Snyder (which I recommend), and it appeared that they not only keyed out backgrounds and replace them, but also rotoscoped in color correcting. Is it possible to take a frame of footage in FCP, lasso a particular area and apply color correction to it--independant of another area of the frame? What would be the process required to do this (does it involve masking).

I'd be really appreciative of anyone who could step me through it or point me to a tutorial. Thanks!

You could do this by creating a second layer in FCP, masking out all but the area you want to correct, and color correcting that. OR you could use a plug-in, like Colorista, that has power windows, which do exactly what you are asking about.

If it's something you can use FCP's 3-Way Limit Effect with, meaning a narrow chroma or luma range, you can do a secondary color correction.
