Rosco Litepad pricing is a ripoff!!!! Read this if you want to save a ton of cash

I don't like that "ripoff" talk. I have a lot of respect for Rosco products and I don't begrudge them their profit even though I AM something of a cheapskate and often grumble about high prices in this industry. The term used is extremely pejorative, too much so for my tastes, brother. [/end rant]

Richard, what is behind the LCD of a large flat panel TV? It can be dimmed and its color temp adjusted right? What is the source of illumination? Would it make a good movie light with some tweaking?

BTW, I finally got a good look at some CoolLights fluoros this week. I liked them and thought they were better built than a competitor's. When I need a new flo I'll look you up.

I know a guy who tried to use 4 large lcd's that were on set as a light source with different colors, he had flicker / scan issues although probably perfect for a sci fi type shoot. Don't know if he was able to sync or not.

Yeah, I think ripoff is too strong. Each company sets their price and goes forward and thats it. These panels were actually in use in the advertising industry long before Rosco got a hold of them but what the heck, a new application for an old idea. Rosco does make some good products like the gels, green screen paint and also they have great flooring products for stage and studio as well.

What is behind LCD? In most cases, its what's known as CCFL or cold cathode fluorescent. I did look into that once for ring lights. I didn't like it for a number of reasons including but not limited to they make them mostly in 12000K but tell you its whatever color temp you asked for. I believe they may have trouble making it in lower color temps for some reason. They are also used in computer cabinet "pimping" up (colors inside the case) and also for cars to dress them up as well as an auto accessory. The attraction to them is they are cheap and they don't really have electrodes so they should last a long while. We may come back to it at some point and revisit the color temp issues. We'll probably see more and more LED backlighting for those displays as well in the future.

Thanks for your comments on the flos!

My beginning models are likely to be a 6" circle, 12" diameter ring, 12 x 6 inch rectangle and 12 x 12 inch square.

Richard,

How would the 12X12 be different from the current 600 LED? Is this adding some more LED's or is it a completely different set or type of LED's.

Hi Kelly,

Totally different fixtures. While the LED 600 is very bright, hard and has some throw, these type of "litepads" are only pieces of acrylic that are "edge lit" along at least two edges and even better 4 edges for more output. So effectively all the LEDs are pointing into the acrylic panel at each other. How does the light get out? What is done next is to laser etch cross hatch lines into one side of the acrylic and the light follows the channels to emanate outward from the panel. Its a very soft and weak output. After that, you put an opaque backing on the side of the acrylic with the laser etching. This blocks light emanation out of the back of the panel. Of course the LEDs offer a similar attraction to the LED 600 in that they can be battery operated and last for a really long time since there really isn't that much wattage being drawn.

What people like to use these for is putting a fixture in a small place where another fixture wouldn't fit or might be to obtrusive. These things are very flat (1/4" thick or so). A common use is sticking it in a car somewhere to illuminate the occupants while driving at night. They may also stick one on the wall next to where a character will block. Lots of uses for a small, thin but weak source like that. It could never compete with the LED 600 in output though. So its just another tool for certain uses where something like the LED 600 may be too big.

Hi Guys

I thought I would drop in and mention that thanks to this site I was able to place an order for Rosco Litepads ( Nu World LED Light Panels) and saved a ton of money. We had two projects on the go - one in London UK and another In Doha Qatar and I was able to save about 25% off of what Rosco was charging me.
The guys at Nu World were awesome and shipped with no issues, I am very impressed.
I know there are a few people that dont like the harsh words in one of the previous posts and maybe they are a bit harsh but the reality is that I made an additional $9000.00 on these two deals because of it.

Well thanks for the great forum

Regards

John
