Roommate scams?

Every email from craigslist comes with a scam warning... what could the scam be? I keep getting responses from craigslist... from people that apparently are struggling with english.

"Is the room still available... I have degree in business degree from university..."

Or my favorite are the "french nurses" that keep replying... the names keep changing, but it's the EXACT same email every time...

"...what are the modalities of the house..."

The "modalities"? :)

WTF

So far "Anna"... "Beth"... and "Anja" have all asked about the modalities.

1 a: the quality or state of being modal b: a modal quality or attribute : form
2: the classification of logical propositions according to their asserting or denying the possibility, impossibility, contingency, or necessity of their content
3: one of the main avenues of sensation (as vision)
4: a usually physical therapeutic agency

you know - "modalities". My brain is tired and makes no sense of those definitions...

Beats me man... have you tried any of the other listing services like roommate.com (I think thats it...). I found a place to live once through there and it was a pretty legit service. The dude was weird, but not any weirder than me :)

Bah! Ha-ha :)

Thanks! Although I didn't mean that I needed a definition of the word... I'm just saying that it would be a pretty amazing coincidence if THREE DIFFERENT prospective roommates... (all girls... *ahem*)... ALL asked several paragraphs of the same info... including asking for the "modalities of the house."

Or maybe the mothership returned me to a parallel reality where that's a common term.

Either way... I am impressed when somebody gets a degree in business degree from university.

Oh... and yeah, I'm also on roommates.com but I'm beginning to think that's a scam unto itself... not completely, but I think it's "seeded"... just like any "match" site that's peppered with hot models that can't seem to get a date... :)

French Nurses? I think I have a room I could rent... :)

There are a lot of scams on Craigslist, and I started to fall into one when we were looking for a House to rent. We knew how many rooms we needed, how much we could afford, would allow a large dog, and started looking from there. We found a really sweet house that met those requirements, plus a bonus room, pool, and on a lake. After a few emails, I learned the guy was a Missionary in Africa, and he said to swing by and look through the windows. That is when my Spidey sense started tingling.

I did a little research, and found this guy's wife was a Realtor. I contacted her at her office, and mentioned I had been talking with her Husband about the property, and the price. She made sure to correct me, that the price was much more than that. "Is your Husband a Missionary?" I asked. Nope. And that was the first Nigerian scam I started to fall for. The guy found the ad, copied the pics and info, then posted it on Craigslist.

Didnt say you needed it :) That was for me so I could possibly try and make sense of the french nurses - no luck... sacre bleu!

Hey Capt'n! Thanks! I think you answered my question! They wanted more pics and details... plus neighborhood. Thanks for clearing it up!

I've grown to detest any con operations based on girls thinking they can take advantage of a dude... or dudes using the implication of girls to con people.

the scam is they will offer to send you a check to hold the apartment. but they will write the check for more than is necessary and request you send the balance back. a few days later their check bounces and you're out a couple hundred bucks.

Here is a cut 'n paste of nearly the exact same email I keep getting over and over... oh, it changes up a bit... but ironically... all the girls (french nurses, italian... whatever...) are 5' 7"...

:) "Oh my day? It was fine... thanks for asking."

It's all "adverts" and "modalities" with these people.

I don't get it..

If they purport to be the seller/landlord I get it... they'd be hoping you'll send them a deposit for the place and they'll just run off with it.

But how can they get money from you when you're the one offerring a place that they have to pay for?

Yes... what cap'n just said.

I'm waiting right now for a girl to come by and check the place out... man... finding decent roommates is tough.

...and she doesn't show... I called and she said she isn't so sure about living with a dude.

:)

Maybe no "jack tripper" after all.
