Room Tone Levels

Hi. i want to get some idea of the levels room tone should be taken at. Should you leave the levels as they were during the shoot or should you boost them up a bit and then re-adjust them in post? Thanks!

I have always taken room tone with the same setting on the boom that I had when we recorded the dialogue. Otherwise you are just creating one more thing that has to be matched in post.

Yes, keep the tone the same level as you had during dialog. Also notice that some rooms have drastically different tones depending on where the mic is, get the area that matches the dialog.

Good luck

One other thing...if the film has a large crew, you will want them in place during your RT (and yes, I know this makes it much more difficult). And, in place means standing still, not talking, not wrapping cables or moving lights, c-stands, etc. But the dynamics of the room will change when there are lots of bodies in it. If this becomes a problem, a trick that can be used (if the director is willing) is to get the director to count to 10 or 15 before calling cut at the end of each take. This will give your sound editor some tails that can be used for RT.
