ROME: New Season

They Live

I want to begin by saying I love this show.

I wanted to start this thread to see who else watches this show, and what they think of it. In particular, I'd like to discuss the cinematography. The way they light characters is very unique IMO. They're not afraid to keep a character in shadows, etc. And there are some long take/steadicam shots, in which the lighting seems to be beautifully planned and plotted out every step of the way.

On top of that you've got a Lucius Vorenus who isn't psychologically stable, a Titus Pollo who is now the one with his head screwed on straight, plus a hedonistic Marc Antony running the state.......I'm thinking it's going to be an amazing season. Do you?

I really like the cinematography of the show. It reminds me a lot of Caravaggio's paintings, just that strong use of shadows in lighting. The last episode had a really cool transfer scene at the party. The camera entered the party and shifted from character to character. And I like the violence in the show, it's very realistic and nonflinching.

This is one of the few things I can watch on TV, too bad its ending after this year.

capitalP, torrent sites are your friends.

Hmmm, torrent sites? I might need to hear more. I'm about to move, and my new place doesn't get HBO. I'm going to be going nuts if I have to miss ROME, and then in April, The Sopranos.

LOL a link please? Are you sure it's ending...? The production value on that show looks crazy, I think the first season cost like 100mill or something like that, or was it just one episode that cost 100mill?

It is ending. HBO announced that this would be their last go at it. I'm pretty sure it's because of the cost.

There are a few reasons for its ending, but mostly because after this year, there isn't much left. While Gaius Julius Caesar is the most famous of all Romans, Augustus (Gaius Octavian) was probably the greatest.

I never get why history craps all over Sulla, he was the first to take Rome. Well actually I know why, but the dude deserves much more credit.

Originally I thought they might go a different route this year, but it looks like they are speeding up the confrontation between Octavian and Mark Anthony and the old senate is taking a back seat. Also the fictionalization of some of the characters have made the story much more interesting.

This show is amazing. I loved Season 1 and Season 2 is getting off to a great start. I think James Purefoy's take on Marc Antony is my favorite. Sure Brando was great. And Richard Burton's version was interesting. But I think the Antony in this series strikes the best balance of self-absorption, brutality, and charm.

The show-down between him and Octavian is gonna be fun to watch.

I just watched se2ep6 and I was disappointed. While I love this season and the show, as somebody who loves history, especially Roman, I am upset with the "fictionalization" of certain characters and events.

/////////SPOILERS\\\\\\\\\\

The death of Brutus, Cassius and Cicero are all fictionalized.
