Does anyone have any experience using the the ROLLS MX422 4 channel field mixer?

How well does it perform?

Hi,

You really would be better off saving up to get a better mixer. The SD302 is pretty much the standard (unless you go with the bigger SD442).

If you can't spend that, you could get a SD Mix Pre as a good entry level starter with high re-sale value.

You could also look used..do a search.

thetre ias plenty of good used mixers you ccan buy and that incl wendt which would live much longer then 302 . also used shure 33 or ad-260 for 70-1000usd , even they are 10yers old they much better then rolls .
why the f.. every one wants the 302 - i want the new sax with digital out to feed the cine alta directly :-)

with cooper out of the game I hope to see more sonosax portable mixers crossing the Atlantic toward America, but with the dollar sinking who knows what the price will be.

agree with you on cooper and money,
but Cooper was very popular and a lot of dealers use to carry them as their top of the line mixer, something fancier than SD and They didn't want to sell Sonosax. that's my experience in NY, at least.
I think you can find the sax for $2000. Is the sax $1100 better than my $900 Wendt? That's my question to justify burning $2000.
BTW, do you know any way to get a little more volume out of the Return output on a Wendt X3?
sorry, sorry,sorry

looks like a nice mixer oleg... im keen to check it out... pity i live in south africa.

i agree about the 302... its long overdue for an update from Sound Devices.

cooper was never better then sqn , espesialy when iv came out , it not better then sd ,only thing its very relible and have no woter resistance problems as 442 and 302 ,but it 20 yers back technology .
about sonosax , i like the digi out what must for me these days ( 900r ,970 and xdcam) , exellent limiters , normal headphone matrix and of course the sax limmiters which are the best .
wendt it very relibel product , sounds good but luck of good mitering and ms decoder just dont make it good for more then eng , it couldnt be cascaded ither so really not for high end. but it ****en relible .
look the $ will rise and the price of the sax would go down , of course if trew audio will remember to update it :-)
about volium , email robert wendt directly , he will probably tell you what resistors to change or will do it by him self - one of the best services you can get in usa .

While the 302 easily has my favorite meters of a mixer in this range... and I like the size and overall interface... I'm not blown away by it. I made a bet with Phil Ptalsky regarding the 302 and a $300 Alesis board mixer... I guess what I'm wondering is how they got -126db sn? Pop a normal sensitivity mic on ch1 and gain it up as needed... do you hear anything... unwanted?

I sometimes use a PSC M4 or Alphamix... and it's pretty much the same thing... standard crap... I haven't used a mixer that rocked my world more then a 442... but that one doesn't really rock my world either.

If all you could afford was the Rolls I wouldn't be afraid to try it... as long as you aren't taking it into a truly professional environment... otherwise go with something legit. At the price the 302 is probably still one of the best choices... but I'd be open to Oleg's alternate suggestions as well.

Thank you everyone, all the mixers listed are reputable good high quality units, but I'm looking for someone's experienced opinion using this Rolls product.

I have a Rolls RP220 dual tube mic preamp I've used in my studio for multi-tracking and such for the last 10 years. It's built like a tank, simple, clean and has a beautiful 6L6 tube tone. It sounds like a clean old Fender amp. I also have a little headphone distribution amp/mixer and it's clean and is great also...and it's cheap/inexpensive. I know Rolls can turn out decent low cost products, they just appear crude, but their effective, like a British sten sub machine gun. I want to know about this mixer.

Does anyone have 1st hand experience with the Rolls MX422?

i actually used to own one... but it was a gift, and had messed up metering and two faulty channels, so i never used it. ha ha! sorry...

i'm with you guys on the mixer front... where the heck are the radical advancements in mixers we've seen in the portable recorder market? i mean, sure, theres less to improve on with mixers, but come on - there is so much that could be done! and these are our number 1 tools (after, of course, the mic)...

I thought more companies would have something like that sony digital mixer by now... I can't believe what a niche product mixers still are... seems like a wide-open market to me... waiting for some company to come in and dominate.

SD stuff is so pretty and neato that they're basically doing that now... but I don't think it would be hard to rock that boat. When it comes down to it... in the field... I haven't heard any real performance differences in fp33, sd302, pscmk4... etc. etc. I'm looking for my next mixer now.

im with you matt. i was actually thinking of that sony when i was typing but never got round to mentioning it. something fusing the nifty powering solutions of the sd 7 series and a bds, the nifty idea's we're seeing in the psc stuff, the build of the wendts, the layouts and ease of use of the sound devices, the programmability and digital integration of that sony, and the sound of the sonosax and cooper stuff...

ha ha im being ridiculous. but that would be cool, wouldnt it.

sigh... im also dying to upgrade my 302 and 442, but what would the point be - there's nothing all that much better right now, and no sign of anything soon either...

I own this Rolls mixer and have used it once or twice on shoots. It works fairly well for what it is and has some nice features, like the dual battery compartment. But as a mixer that you might use as part of a 'run and gun' set up it fails miserably. All the ins and outs are on the underside, so forget putting it into a regular sound bag (such as the petrol PEGZ). If you have all the inputs plugged up then it is very difficult to get at the gain knobs. The phantom and lowcut switches are push on push off and are right next to each other again on the underside of the mixer. Really hard to fiddle with these on the move.

I ended up buying the SD 302 and am as happy as larry now. Hope this helps

I just got the Rolls and it works well. It's simple, well made, and it looks good. It has: 1kHz tone, slate mic, 4 channels, vol, trim, pan, phantom, 100Hz cut, & a varible master limiter, VU meters (luv-em!) line level outs & -30dB pad. I tested the mixer, into the camera, mixer - camera to DV Rack, split signal into a Marantz PMD 671 2 track CF recorder... I then took the files into Adobe Audition. It's clean, tracks hold up really well using 3, 6, 10 dB boost (still very clean) etc... Overall, I'm happy with a nice simple & effective system.

Yes the access to the rear panel is a small problem that I've solved.
