Some of my best early shooting memories were at 24 Hrs of Daytona (now Rolex) and 12 Hrs of Sebring in the mid-late 80s.
4 or 5 years in a row, all area access, pits, a golf cart.
Wandering, getting b roll. Day and night (trying to get flaming exhaust at night).
Helicopter (Jet Ranger) at Sebring sitting on the floor, feet on the skids, pilot trying to time the cars coming around the turn onto the long straightaway then gunning it, nose diving down, getting passed at about 125.
The banked turns of Daytona, the bumpy airport runway surface of Sebring.
The sounds. The smells.
And like jcs says, all classes of cars bunched up making interesting clusters and consequences.
The beauty, power, performance and design perfection of the prototypes from Porsche, Audi, Jaguar...
911's having prototypes pass them on the inside of insanely tight curves like they were glued to the ground.
The Corvettes back then were just power brutes- great acceleration, fast on the straights, horrible on the turns- very loose rear ends.
I would imagine today's Vettes (especially racing) would have much more sophisticated suspensions.
2 of the 3 races of the Triple Crown of Endurance Racing. I never made it to Le Mans, haha.
Man, fun times, good memories... *sigh*
