Roland R-05 + Tram TR50 question

I'm running a Tram TR-50 into a Roland R-05 with a jack input. I recorded an interview tonight, and when listening to the audio you can hear quite a bit of the background noise. My question is do the two embedded "internal" mics on the Roland keep recording even when a lav mic is plugged in? Is there a way to have it record ONLY the audio from the lav mic when its plugged in?

Might be a noob question but its bugging me that theres distracting background noise in my voice audio. It could also be that simply the lav mic was picking up the background audio on its own. Anyone who can clear this up please do!

Cheers
Nick

I don't know the answer, but I can tell you how to test it yourself.

Plug the lav in and start recording. Now, rub your finger over the surface of each mic while you describe what you're doing with your voice.

When you play it back you will hear a distinct rubbing noise while you were rubbing any active mic.

that helped a lot, thanks Mike! I definitely heard the rubbing on the lav mic but not on the internal mics. So the internal mics were not recording and it was simply the ambient noise from the lav. I think part of it is I had the mic gain on the roland on H instead of L so it probably picked up more background noise than normal. Thanks again

Lowering the record volume will not reduce acoustical BG noise, it will need to be brought back up eventually either way and will still be present.. and would also contain electronics noise from the low level recording. Record a hot as possible (easy).. whilst still leaving sufficient headroom for peaks (not so easy)
