Rode SM5 shockmount and DVX100B

I recently purchased a Rode SM5 shockmount (about $50) to use with the Rode NTG1 and the on-camera mic holder on my DVX-100B

The SM5 is well made, machined metal (black) with tapped holes for 1/4" and 3/8" threaded fittings on the underside (there is a post elsewhere on this site that shows a picture of it.) I also purchased a 3/8" to 5/8" stud adapter (about $10) so I could use the SM5 with a light stand as a microphone holder - my mic pole has a 3/8" fitting, so the SM5 can be used there as well. I also got a Rycote Extension Handle with a 3/8" stud (about $35) so I can have an assistant use the handle and the SM5 as a handheld mount for the NTG1. (That would make the cost of the SM5 and Rycote as a dedicated handheld shockmount to be only $85 - far below the cost of other handheld shockmounts.) You also get a spare full set of four of the rubber shockmount bands with the SM5.

The NTG1 is very sensitive, and even with the shockmount (and the rubber isolation on the DVX mount), it appears to pick up a bit of noise from the camera. Also - if you're using a deadcat wind screen - be careful to check that it is not hanging down into the top of the frame when you're shooting.

If you own a DVX, I would say that the SM5 is the most versatile of the Rode shockmounts - you'll get the most utility out of it.

As an aside, there was also enough room to mount my Sony UWP wireless lav mic receiver on the accessory shoe mount next to the SM5 when the SM5 is in the DVX mic holder.

By the way - if you are looking to pick up the Rode NTG microphones (either the NTG1 w/o battery phantom power or the NTG2 with it) - keep an eye on eBay - you can get some pretty good deals if you are patient, know what you're buying and what the usual retail price is (for some reason, many people bid used gear right up to the B&H new price). I picked up the NTG1 in new condition (in an auction from an av store on eBay) for $139.
