Rode NTG-3 Pricing Anomaly

I noticed B&H is offering a "signature" version of the Rode NTG-3 for $700 including a free Rode Blimp ($300 value). Since the standard version of the NTG-3 is also $700, sans blimp, am I missing something or is this just an awesome deal? (It helps that the blimp is already on my wish list.) My worry is that the signature version is inferior or crippled in some way. Any thoughts?

I can tell you, the NTG-3 is not crippled in any way whatsoever. The body has a custom black BnH finish and that is a great deal.

If you're looking for a good buy, grab them while they're still available.

Don't forget to register on line at Rode, for their free 10yr warranty.

Cheers.

Wow, that IS a really good deal! Id jump on it if I didnt already have the full Rycote Windshield Kit and a Senn 416. I dont see that deal anymore though, so guess they caught the "error".

I think youre better off going used. I know the NTG-3 (non-black) version sells used on ebay pretty regularly for around $350 and the Rode Blimp sells for around $220. K-Tek Booms range all over the place from $100-$600 depending on version, size, material and style. You dont need the Pearstone shockmount as the Rode Blimp can be used without the dead cat or blimp section, but should IMO always be used with at least the blimp no matter the circumstances.

I bought my NTG-3 used last year (still has the 10 year warranty) for $340. Bought a K-Tek 110CCR for $200 and got the Rycote S330 (instead of the Rode) for $249. Added all up, it's probably around the same price for a new NTG3.

And thats a GREAT inexpensive way to go! Good choice in gear!

Thanks! It's a pretty cool setup since most of what I'm doing in SFX gathering. Rarely do I production sound. However, I went this route in order to save money for a Sound Devices sooner or later.

Ah, yea, the SD recorders are well worth it! I have one myself and love it! What recorder are you using now? You could get something like a MixPre-D and still have the SD pre-amps then output it to your recorder. Save you some money in the mean time.

I have a Tascam DR680. I've been thinking about getting the USBPre-2 as the front end and going SPDIF out to the 680. I can probably get it for under $700. My biggest concern is that the Tascam doesn't have a menu for 48kF and frame rate. I still do want that versatility to do production sound. At times, the Tascam feels 'cheap' to me and I love the build quality of the SD recorders. I look at buying a SD recorder as a one time purchase that I'll never look back on.

Yea, IMO it is best to wait till you can do it right and forget it. Thats how I tend to do things.
