RODE NTG-3 plus 18cm Rycote Softie - Won't fit on INV-7 HG lyre mount?

I just bought an NTG-3 mic and an 18cm Rycote Softie (got the 18cm based on the Rycote size chart). Put the softie on the NTG-3 and it fits great.

I haven't yet bought my mic mount for the boom pole. My plan was to follow some very positive recs I found here on dvxuser and get the Rycote INV-7 hg for this NTG-3/Softie set up. But now that I see just how little of the mic is left exposed once the softie is on I'm concerned that it's not enough to fit into the two "clips" on the INV-7. Can anybody help me on this question? I can't find the specs that indicate minimum distance needed bare on the mic to fit into this mount.

Or does anyone have an alternate suggestion for a shock mount for a boom for this setup?

What is the useable dimension for the mount? I have several mounts; K-Tek, AT and something else. I'll measure what I have.

The INV-7 is their broadcast mount and designed for use in studio environments. Therefore it doesn't not accomodate the softie. They do make a softie lyre mount which includes the lyre system and either a camera mount (Rycote p/n 037306) or pistol grip (Rycote p/n 033702). B&H offers the lyre system with a camera and boom adapter (without the pistol grip) for $119.00 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/407104-REG/Rycote_037306_Medium_Hole_Softie_Mount.html)

The lyre system is a great shock mount system. I own it as part of the the Rycote Full Windscreen Kit which was one of the best investments I made for wind protection and shock mounting but not an inexpensive solution. However, I can say that the blimp system has saved audio during outdoor shots where the softie (which I also own) could not.

For the Softie you will need the Softie Mount or the InVision Video Mount.

Althoughthe better option would have been to get the Universal Camera Kit as this comes with everything and the small basket windshield with its supplied Windjammer is actually a little better than the Softie - and cheaper as well.

Okay - I think I just was little confused. I thought the INV-7 was compatible with the softie. My main use is not mounted on the camera but rather on a boom pole, trying to record exterior dialogue.

So my first reaction is: I should return the softie and just bite the bullet and buy the full windscreen kit. A lot pricier than a pistol grip plus softie but probably worth it.

If you have the opportunity to return the softie and go for the full windscreen kit that would be what I would recommend. I fought the idea of spending the nearly $700 (I had to buy the kit 7 to support my long shotguns). I had an important outdoor shoot along the florida coast for an indie feature and knew I needed better wind protection than I could get with my softie. In discussing this with B&H (who were very knowledgeable) it was put to me this way, there is no better wind protection made than the Rycote full blimp with windjammer. If it can't be done with this system, it can't be done. The result was that I was grabbing location dialog in winds of 25+ mph, and although the wind was howling around my head, I could not hear any rumbling thru the headphones. In fact, we had to reposition the boat at times because the wind was making howling noises when passing by the canopy uprights, which the mic was picking up crystal clear, but when playing back the audio, at no time did I get any wind rubble or noise, and the high frequencies required very little stroking to brighten them up.

When I'm working in low wind outdoors, or working indoors, I use the blimp without the windjammer, and if the mic is stationary, I slide the blimp off altogether, and just just the lyre and pistol grip. And in talking with other users of this system (including one who had to use the boom pole and blimp to fend off an attacking vulture in South America during a shoot), it'll be the last blimp system I have to buy. Oh, and you'll come to appreciate the pistol grip on those occasions when you need to detach the pole and get the mic into some tight places like cars.

I would if you can.

If you really can't afford a full windshield kit, then go for the S-series kit; it gives most of what the full kit will do at a price close to that of a Softie kit.

Thanks everyone for your advice (and ggrantly for offering to measure you gear)!

I've decided to return the softie and buy the full windscreen kit.

I think you can click the end of the mic , then another end click on the XLR cable head. ... that's sometimes I do on my OKTAVA 012.
