Rode NTG 3 on Mixpre or Edirol R44

After weeks researching this forum and others on the net, I taught I should ask for some more serious opinions as I couldn't find out the information's I needed.

Here is the situation. I have an Sony FX1, an Edirol R9 and I'm buying a Rode NTG 3, till now I have always rented audio equipment and recorded in the Edirol R9 that synced up perfectly at post, mainly I'm trying to figure out if it's better to buy a Mixpre (or a used Wendt X3 mixer) and continue recording into the Edirol R9, or, if to buy the Edirol R44 and forget about a mixer interfacing with it. My main concerns are wich one will sound better and durability, as the Edirol R44 seems very plastic.

It depends on your situation. If you really want to run more than two channels (like running a boom and 3 lavs), I'd go with the R-44. It's durable enough; won't fall apart on you too easily. The downsides are: not the greatest pre-amps and the gain pots are small. Oh, and it's a battery hog, but you've probably already heard that. :(
