Rode NTG-3 and problems!

Hi all, this is my first post and i'm new to sound recording having come from a photography background primarily. I hope someone can help me with an issue i have.
I have a Rode NTG3 mic currently connected to an Apogee Duet but even with all levels up and phantom on, I can only get a response from the mic if I click my fingers a cm from the end or if I shout right next to it. I have tried the same setup with a different mic (RODE NT2000) which seems to work fine. Am I doing something wrong or is the mic dead? Also, I plan to purchase a Marantz PMD661 or a Sound Devices 702 or 702T.
Does anyone have an opinion on this setup and is timecode on the 702T a necessity.
Thanks.

Aidan

Did you just try the other mic in the exact same setup? With the same XLR cable, etc?

Test it. Power everything down and don't change anything... then change out the mic and power everything back up. Same problem? One mic works and the other doesn't in the identical use (cables etc.) ?

Considering the Duet has so many soft controls... you should make sure that you didn't disable or change anything. Look on your PC to be sure that the levels are right, and check the back of the Duet unit to see 48v phantom indicated (LED will be lit for each channel with 48v set)... then make sure you have the correct cable from the breakout. The Duet appears simple, but since everything's software based, you have plenty to double check.

Everything was exactly the same except the mic. I have no other options here but to assume the mic is dead.

So why ask the question then?

About the 661 vs. 702(T)... there's no comparison there... if you're at the either/or stage then you should do some more research on both. The 702(t or not) is a couple classes above the 661. If you want a middle ground recorder check out the Tascam HD-P2.

RODE has an outstanding 10 year warranty. If the mic is not working, return it to the dealer or drop by http://usa.rodemic.com/support.php

Make sure to slowly put the mic in the metal tube, too fast and hard can add a lot of air pressure, like a piston. I go so far as to open both ends before sliding the mic in.

Thanks, that's really helpful and may well explain what has happened to the mic.

I will check it out further.
