Rode NTG-2 w/ Canon XH-A1 not working

Hi, I posted this in the XH-A1 forum as well but haven't got any answers yet.
Today I finally got my Rode NTG-2 mic but cannot get any sound with it hooked up to my Canon XH-A1. I'm trying to determine if it's a mic or camera problem, though I'm sure it's not the mic since it's brand new. I read through both manuals and followed the directions closely.

I plugged it in to Ch. 1 on the cam, changed the input to XLR in the menu, turned up the audio levels, and flipped the switch to Ch.1 - nothing. I switched on the phantom power - nothing. I tried an AA battery instead of phantom - nothing. I tried a different XLR cable - nothing. I tried both XLR inputs and about every conceivable combination of switches flipped - nada.

I had headphones on the whole time so I know the levels were turned up b/c I could hear the on-board mic when it was switched on, but when I switched to external I get nothing. Also it says in the camera manual that when a mic is plugged in the on-board mic automatically shuts off, but it doesn't (until I change the menu setting).

Thanks for any help, I'm desperate here!

Damn that camera's audio control's mess :( Good camera otherwise but the audio controls layout are beyond mindless.

After having used just about every pro and semi-pro camera out there, the A1 forced me to go online to figure the audio out.

You set the XLR IN menu, then switch to mic input somewhere near the front right. Turn phantom on somewhere in same location. THEN make sure the Mic Att swich is off (somewhere on top of cam). Lastly, there is a XLR gain up in menu that might or might not need switching on. Then adjust your gain levels.

If after all that you still don't get a signal try switching out the cable.

Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried those again but am still getting nothing. Wish I had a different camera to try it on as well. I agree that the audio controls are not very intuitive and all over the place. The DVX is MUCH easier. I wonder if maybe the XLR ports are not working. I just got the thing back from the service center because the firewire port was busted so it wouldn't surprise me. Doesn't seem like they quality check these things too well before they ship 'em out....
