Rode ntg-2 + sony hvr-hd1000

Hey, this is my first time here on these forums and I was wondering what sort of adapter I would need to connect my NTG-2 rode microphone with my Sony HVR HD1000. The sony doesn't have any XLR ports so I know that I need an adapter. I think that the microphone runs on batteries so doesn't need phantom power. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That should work. Just be aware that any mics you purchase in the future will probably not have a battery power option, so phantom power could become an issue down the road.

FilmNZ has a listing of equipment suppliers, hopefull one of those companies can help.

Would that adapter work? It's the cheapest one I can find and the belt clip would also be useful. Another thing, I live in New Zealand, does anyone know of any NZ or Australian websites I could buy an adapter from? Thanks Jordan for your quick reply.

I wouldn't waste money on this as it has no phantom power and the preamps are probably junk. My suggestion is to go with the cheapest option first, an xlr to 1/8" adaptor like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/423360-REG/Hosa_Technology_MIT_156_MIT_156_Low_to_High.html or http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/589872-REG/Pearstone_8111240_LMT100_Low_to.html

The NTG-2 is a hot mic so you may not need a preamp like the JuicedLink. Also, these adaptors are the transformer type so they properly terminate the balanced xlr cable. Thus you can do a 20 or 30 foot run of xlr with your mic and not worry about hum and buzz from an unbalanced line. You can pick up the first one on amazon for $15. Also you can get two of these with a splitter and feed two mics into your camera for each channel.

Thank you both for your quick replies. I think I'll go with the cheap option mentioned by rszebras because I don't want to be wasting a good $350 on a preamp that might not even work as well. Are you sure that this cheap cable won't somehow affect the performance of my mic?

The adaptor won't affect the performance of the mic. It simply converts the balanced xlr to unbalanced 1/8" stereo mini plug. I use this method on my Canon HV30 and it works like a charm. It works best when you have a mic that puts out a strong signal, like the NTG-2, so you can keep the preamp on the camera turned down as low as possible. Cranking up the cheap camcorder preamp is what causes the hissing sound.

The two links you posted do not reference the correct adaptor. Those are simply xlr to 1/8" without the transformer. I actually have the Hosa one and it works great for very short runs where you're not using balanced xlr cables. You want the one with the transformer because it properly terminates the balanced line. It is the Hosa MIT-156: http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-MIT-156-...8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1249006364&sr=8-1 It's only a few dollars more so get that one. You won't regret it.

Thanks! Do you know any other places that sell this exact cable but closer to NZ? Otherwise I'll be paying around $150NZ for the shipping and item.

Actually never mind I think I found an Australian website, thanks so much for your help guys.
