Rode NTG 2 Questions ?

I have a couple of questions regarding the use of my NTG-2.

1. First i notice one of the XLR pins in the back of my mic is sticking out quite a bit more than the other two. It is approx 2mm more. Is this normal or damaged.

2. Is there a max cable length for running phantom power ? I have a Audio Techhnica 25' cable and i cannot seem to use phantom power with it. I use a AA and all is good. Also i use phantom with my 1.5' no problems. I cannot seem to find any info on this.

3. Can someone point me in the right direction for obtaining proper audio levels while shooting. I seem to be a little on the quiet side once imported into FCP. Do most people go for a higher Db on the camera and reduce in post or vice versa. I have been using one channel a little lower than the other for possible clipping issues. Any good advice ?

Thanks

1. My NTG1 is like that. Pretty sure its normal. My guess it that pin grounds first for safety's sake or something along those lines.

2. Not that I'm aware of. I've used 50+ with my NTG1 (phantom only) with great success.

3. I aim for normal dialog to peak at -12. Works pretty darn well for me.

no problem with the pin , its cheap product what do you expect, quality control or neutric connectors on the back ? :-)

your cable missing one of sided ,2 or 3 disconnected
buy betetr cable or go fix it
when you shoot try the peacks go to -10dbfs at least ( each fot 2 db)

I kind of figured i was not getting enough db in pre. I had a group of quiet kinder kids. I should of been paying more attention to the audio.

I'll check the cable and see if something is wrong with it.

Thanks for the help everyone !

Oleg needs to be taken with a grain of salt sometimes. While the mic is not expensive the long pin is not because of shoddy workmanship but intentional so that ground is always the first pin connected. I have seen this on other devices also though it isn't all that common.

He's right about your cable, it probably has a broken connection. I tend to record hot but I'm mostly recording FX so I'm not sure that is the best production advice. My understanding is that your normal dialog level should sit around -18 to -20 (used to be -18 but a lot of digital meters don't have a mark at -18 but do at -20 so...). That should give you enough level and enough head room. For FX I try to keep my peaks at around -3 (FS) and always have fast limiter set just before clipping. I wouldn't recommend that for production though.
I've run over a hundred feet with phantom power with no problems.
