Rode NTG-2/Juiced Link Problems

Hello all!

I'm having trouble with my audio in regards to it being very quiet.
My Gear:
Rode NTG-2
Zoom H2
Juicedlink CX-231
Canon Rebel T2i (Magic Lantern)

I've followed advice from as many people that I could in regards to in camera settings, external settings etc., but the result is still the same. Recording both externally and internally still produces an almost inaudible sound. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

1- Do you have a fresh battery in your JuicedLink unit?

2- Is your unit swtiched on?

3- Is there a fresh battery in your NTG-2 mic? ( or are you using phantom power from the JuicedLink unit to power the mic? )

4- Do you have the gain set to Hi?

5- Do you have the JuicedLink trim pot ( gain control on front of unit ) turned up all the way?

Thanks for the reply!
1. I put fresh batteries in for good measure.
2. It's on (Red Light Indicator)
3. Fresh Battery.
4. Gain is HI
5. Trim Pot far to the right.

I checked the XLR cable to make sure it was working properly and it is. On the underbelly of the juicedlink I have CH. 1 set to Mic. On the Zoom I have it set to Front 90 degrees. The only way to get audible sound at -24db is by setting the gain on my Zoom H2 to HI but it gives me a terrible hiss.

How are you connecting all these things together - what connects to what through what port?

Assuming you're recording dialog, how far away is the mic from the mouth of the person speaking? Low levels are frequently caused by positioning the mic too far from the sound source. Shotguns don't magnify distant sounds the way telephoto lenses magnify distant scenes - you need to work it within about 18-22 inches of the person speaking for optimum results.

'Guns don't have much 'wiggle room' for sloppy aiming - got to keep the axis pointed at the target within +/- 7 degrees or so - so is it aimed right at their throat?

"On the Zoom I have it set to Front 90 degrees"
- That setting is for the internal on-board mics and has no affect when using the external 'Ext. Mic in' or 'Line in'. The mic gain switch also has no affect when using the ext. 'Line in' connection.
- Are you sure the cables going from the JuicedLink to the Zoom are wired correctly? Cable from mic to mixer?
- If the JuicedLink has a Line out, try that using the 'Line in' on the H2.
-Recheck the software menu settings in the Zoom: 48k/16 or 24; Plug in power-off; Low cut-off; AGC-off; Mono mix off.

I'm not hearing anything on the SoundCloud clip. In this case, a file on Dropbox or other file sharing site would be better for diagnostic purposes... unless there's a way to download the raw file from SoundCloud.
Which model JuicedLink do you have?
Can you plug headphones into the JuicedLink to confirm that the mic, cable and JuicedLink are functioning OK?

I have the CX-231. The sound clip It does sound silent but it's there. It's just very very quiet. You'd have to turn your volume up all the way. I've made it downloadable though. I can't plug headphones into the JL put I've tested to make sure the XLR cable works by plugging it into my M-Audio and recording my guitar.

Check your switch settings on the Juiced 231, mic plugged into Channel 1, Channel 2 vacant
Power: ON
Pan: C
Phantom: 48v
Phantom Channel 1: ON
Phantom Channel 2: OFF
Input Att 1: MIC
Input Att 2: MIC
Gain 1: HIGH
Gain 2: LOW
Trim 1: CENTER
Trim 2: FULL DOWN (COUNTERCLOCKWISE)

If they check out, I'd suspect a faulty 3.5mm patch cable or a faulty EXT MIC input jack on the recorder.
