Rode NTG-2 - defective connector?

That's the ground pin, having it longer ensures that the mic will always be grounded before phantom power is applied. Take a look at a grounded power plug and you'll notice the same thing there, the ground pin is usually longer than the others.

this helped. i just had a new one sent to me thinking it was defective. sending it back now =/

I just bought this mic and I noticed that one of three pins (I hope my terminology is right) on the mic connector is little bit longer than two other pins. I bought XLR cable too and I can't pug it in entirely (maybe because of this?). However, microphone works when connected. Is this normal, or all three pins should have the same length?
Here are pictures of all three pins

The longer pin is perfectly normal and intentional, for the reason Jordan outlined. Another example of Rode's outstanding attention to detail in their designs. As for the XLR not plugging in all the way, as long as it clicks into position and latches there's no problem. With new gear it's expected that springs, detents, etc, will be a little stiff until it's been used a little. Nothing to worry about.
