Rode Lavalier with Zoom H4n - best connection?

Hi,

I'm going to need a lav to shoot an interview and am about to purchase the Rode Lavalier.

I'm slightly confused as to how this will work with my Zoom H4n.

I read somewhere I will need a Rode Micon 5 adaptor for XLR - is this correct?
And is the best way to get the optimum sound from this combination?

Thanks

Yes. XLR is the preferred professional audio connector. Note that if everything is working perfectly, there is no QUALITY difference (in this example) between XLR and 3.5mm connections. But XLR is superior for ruggedness and locking ability (although, alas, not for size).

The RODE lavalier and Zoom H4n with Micon 5 work rather well. I'd toss on a Micon extension cable with any of the heavier recorders to give yourself extra cable length to avoid stressing the connector or accidentally ripping the lav off once mounted. It's easier to deal with the thin cable to make the run rather than feeding heavy gauge xlr. I like to make a few loops with the cable and tape them to the inside of the shirt so that if the subject does yank on the cable, it stresses the loop and not the lav. Good way to minimize clothing rustle too.
