Rode Blimp

A Tip for anyone buying, or who have the Rode Blimp.

Check out the Soldered Joints at both ends of the supplied cable.
I had noise problems and I decided to check the cable.
The quality of the soldering was very poor, in fact one of the connections was so dry it just pulled away! I hate Switchcraft XLRs and plan to change them for Neutrik.

I took mine apart and it looks OK... the pin2 and pin3 connections are not only soldered but sealed in heat-shrink. The shield cable for pin1 appears full of solder (solder was fully pulled in) and well fused to pin1 as well as the connector grounding tab.

I do prefer Neutrik, but my connectors appear to have been soldered as well as any other cable I've bought.

Maybe so...?

When I read this I immediately took mine apart to check it. I do agree... as I said... that Neutrik is the way to go for connectors... but at the price of the blimp I haven't mentioned it because I thought it would be getting too picky. If somebody was really upset about the shorty with Switchcraft then they could get a starquad (I'd suggest the thin) w/ neutrik from markertek for something like $15... and then just toss the other cable.

I've used switchcraft for 40 years and they seem fine to me, I never really had any problems with them, and much of this useage was in rock n roll bands (a pretty high stress environment for cables and connectors) and studio work. With the little useage these connectors will get in a Blimp, I wouldn't worry too much. Oxidation is the real threat and that just requires occasional cleaning.

My Rode Blimp seems to be fine.

i might be missing something,
but I dont think anyone is getting on your case.

There is no need to make a big thing of this. I personally dislike Switchcraft, a view formed in 30 Years of being a University Electronics Technician.

The lead on my Blimp was poorly soldered, I thought it right to warn other members of dvx in case there were more out there.
I was trying to avoid someone possibly having problems in the middle of a shoot.

I was trying to HELP In future I won't bother, because you can't do right for doing wrong on this site.:Drogar-Mad(DBG):

I'm sorry that this thread somehow got misinterpreted... you said you had a problem with your cable due to poor soldering... I took mine apart, even though I've had no problems, and my cable appears to be soldered pretty well.

I followed that up in agreement that yes, I too prefer Neutrik connectors.

I'm not understanding the ill feelings? Everybody's being cool here and letting you vent your issue unchallenged.

Which makes it sound like there's a manufacturing issue... so are you doing the forum a favor and I am not? Mine looks good... so...? Am I not also trying to help? Getting these things to the USA at these prices wasn't easy... but no matter what, based on my past reputation, I never automatically endorse anything... if the blimp wasn't good... I'd be the FIRST to say so... but it IS good... and a bargain... and my cable looks and works fine... so when somebody posts a sort of warning about construction quality... I'm going to have to tell the truth and say that mine looks and works great.
