RODE Blimp

I just got my RODE Blimp the other day from DVeStore, $299.00, I'm impressed with it's construction, appearance and functionality.

The blimp follows a traditional blimp design like Sennheiser & Rycote, two half sphere end caps that screw on to the cylindrical body. It's made of flexible injected plastic (hexagonal patterns) with the crucial fabric lining inside needed for cutting air movement and creating DAS (Dead Air Space), no foam inside (foam does not work too well for cutting wind and leaving the frequencies intact).

The Blimp body slides snuggly onto a rail system where an adjustable handle with an internal tail cable runs through it and terminates at the end of the handle.

Overall it's a well crafted practical design, it looks good and it works, it kills wind disruption giving you the audio you want.

It comes with different size diameter rings for suspending your shotgun mic. It fits all the way up to a 12" ME66 or you could put in there a 7" AT 875R and anything in between.

It comes with a Dead Kitty/Dead Wombat furry, fits snuggly and does it's job well, and there's a nice fold-up hair brush for it!

I recommend anyone in the market for a blimp to check out this system and see the value you get for the money.

Just got mine. I have nothing else to compare it to, since I have never used a blimp system before, but I am impressed. Very simple to adjust, lightweight but solid, and well thought out.

Thanks Guy!

Had the blimp out in fairly strong wind the other day, it worked really well. Tried it with the kitty on & off, both gave excellent results.

Thanks RODE for the good deal. Now I need to make a case for it.

While it is well built this sucka is HEAVY. It is noticeably heavier than the Rycote or Sennhesier Blimp. The plastic body is also heavier, thicker, and a little wider and longer but, I've had the Rycote crack on me. Part of the problem is that it is designed to work with a multitude of mics so it is unnecessarily large. The pistol grip is also heavy and though it feels good hand held, you can feel the weight on an extended boom pole. It also suffers from a weak pivot point light duty single screw. The shock mount is good and comes with extra replacement parts. Outfitted with the wind jammer and you better be eating your wheaties.
Bottom line: strudy, works well, good price, HEAVY....7 out of 10
Dimensions: 19" x 4 3/4"

I think Guy from DvStore compared Blimps and found the RODE to be a few ounces heavier than the Rycote or Sennheiser. The pivot point can be adjusted to be rock solid, one needs to take some time and work it. It does weigh a little more, overall I really like it.
