Rod/rails mount for Formatt mattebox

Hey,

I'm contemplating making myself a rails-mount for my Formatt mattebox. I've sketched out the ideas and they seem to work very well and I'm wondering if anyone else would be interrested in something like this if the price was about $75 +s/h? They would be aluminium and powdercoated flat black.

Let me know if you'd be interrested and I'll se what I can find out.

I would be interested. How would you address the interface between the mattebox and the threaded portion of the lens with your intended solution? Perhaps a non rigid coupling of some sort? How might this approach effect the use of 4" x 6" filters; would they have the same freedom of vertical motion as they currently do?

My idea is to reuse the ring that comes with the mattebox and have that screw into a mount. If - for some reason - that turns out to be a bad idea then I'll integrate the ring into the mount.

This approach wouldn't require you to modify the mattebox in it's existing form - and therefore not mean anything to the freedom of motion in the filters.

Btw - looking forward to see the final version of Violet. Saw the trailer (?) on the fest pages :-)

Hi Tony,

I think that your approach is a valid one. I too have looked at creating a proper rod based support for the Formatt mattebox (even created a 3D model in our CAD system) but never proceeded. As long as the integration doesn't effect the function, I think you would have a very valid product. If it sold for anywhere near your predicted price, it would be a winner.

Thanks for the comment on Violet, we hope to have the remaining scenes for the feature development shot by the end of this month. We have a very ambitious shooting schedule coming up later this week and if it goes as planned, we will knock out all the remaining interior shots over the course of three days. The actual feature, if all goes as planned, would begin principal photography this fall. I posted a link to a complete scene in our thread and have been keeping it updated as it evolves over the course of the editing process. If you have the time (its only a 24 second scene) and interest I would enjoy learning your feedback on it.

Thanks and let me know how the development of the solution for the Formatt progresses.

Kevin
