rock/metal band music video problem

Hey, im doing a video for a rock/metal band with a LOUD drummer. They will be miming to playback. Im currently looking for a location, but its hard to find since the drummer is loud. We've tried all the usual dampening tricks (sticking stuff to the cymbals etc), but its still so loud.

I've heard there are plastic cymbals that look exactly real which are used in music videos? At this rate, we're never going to be allowed to shoot anywhere cos its so damn loud. We're hoping to shot outside.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

They have small booths which isolate the drummer, so he doesn't overpower everyone. You might try that route.

Hey, thanks for the reply. However I dont think that would work, we dont want to be able to 'see' anyhting like that, it should really just look like the band playing.

I have a friend who was at a Lost Prophets video shoot, and he said the drum kit was almost completely silent, as if it was made of rubber - but it loked totally realy. I cant seem to find any info on it on the web though,...

I bet he has a double bass pedal, just scoot it away from the drum, and make 6 overlapping squares of ductape on the bottom of all of the cymbals.

Shocking suggestion here, but tell the drummer not to play so loudly :)

If you can avoid shots of the drum heads, you could probably get away with setting practice pads on them which will pretty much kill them. You can also disconnect or remove the pedal. Be careful with taping too much stuff on the cymbals as this can sometimes lead to cracking.

Turn the playback music up louder.
Pay for a location.

We're willing to pay. Its just impossible tofind anywhere "urban" looking that isnt actually near people...

Thanks for the suggestions tigeba. I often see low budget rock vids on TV where the drummer isnt really "going for it", and it looks really bad...

turn the snare off, you have that little section of like chainmail on the bottom of it, turn the knob the pulls it away from the bottom of the drum.
