Rock Band

Casually wondering through Best Buy the other night to get some ideas for some holiday shopping, then I saw a demo of Rock Band running on a demo XBox360. I stared at it for a second, thinking how silly this game was. And how our youth has degraded to the point where they no longer make crappy music in their garages. Instead, they plug up some fake instruments to a video game console and 'rock out' by pressing buttons.

I picked up the drumsticks and started tapping on the fake drums trying to make out some of the percussion hits of Hole's 'Celebrity Skin.' Nearly a half hour later I found myself so proud that I had made it passed the song 'Black Hole Sun' in Easy mode...and there was a trail of umpteen year olds standing behind me waiting to show me how old I am.

This game is nothing short of the epitome of a fast-food ADD youth lifestyle...but boy was it a ton of fun. If my wife loves me, she'll at least try to play guitar with me on Christmas morning.

All thanksgiving, my sisters and my younger cousins played that game, almost on-stop.

I had a similar thought. I said to my sister "Well, at least whenever a bunch of idiots want to start a band, they can just play this, instead of subjecting everyone to their shitty music."

I walked in when they were playing "Wave of Mutilation" by The Pixies, and my cousin was just saying "La la, blah blah" instead of the lyrics. I was a tad offended.

I've only tried Guitar Hero, and loved it. As a guitar player (or used to be) it was really fun. I'm getting a Wii, but the problem is that the guitar it comes with isn't lefty. Sure you can flip it, but then the wamy bar gets in the way and you can't use the wamy bar. You'd think you could purchase from the company itself special lefty guitars, but noooo.

Anyways, those games are fun.

I love Rockband

I cannot turn away when I see it. I play better guitar than the G-Hero instrument but I stumbled across the drum version and just had a blast; and was totally jamming. (Scored like 92% ?)

Too much fun and JUST LIKE DRUMMING (Kind of ...)

Base pedal, hi hat, crash, toms ....

Awesome.

I had some skater high school kids watching me and then when it was their turn, they couldn't keep a beat for their life. They gave up.

The drum track on Maps on Expert is possibly the most fun anyone will ever have in their life.

It may actually feel too much like the real thing.

While I agree that rock band may be fun, I have to dissagree that it is some sort of degeneration of youth entertainment. I think Rock band is not only great for getting kids into playing music, sure it's maybe just for rhythm and hand eye coordination, but it's also dang entertaining. While I don't have kids yet, I can say that I would rather my future kids be playing Rock band over super mario any day. When I was a yoot, I had myself a little rock band. we annoyed the neighbors, annoyed our parents and had the cops called on us on a regular basis. If only rock band was there to save the day.

Me too Scharky !

Why the comments about "youth degrading" and "a bunch of idiots and their shitty music ..." ?

I wish they had Rockband when I was kid. I bet it turns a ton of them onto the real thing. Getting old aint that bad dudes. Don't be so envious.

It's funny. I occasionally fill in on guitar or bass for a band my friends are in. Just a coulple of weeks ago, I was practicing with one of the guitar players so that I could get ready for a show. He says, "If we hurry up and get these songs down, we'll have about an hour to play Guitar Hero."

It's addicting. I'm kinda hooked now.

The drum machine games are pretty cool, because it's like actual drumming. You could possibly learn to play the drums by playing those.

However, the guitar games aren't all that fun to me. I was naturally good at Guitar Hero and could play expert on my 3rd song, but it just doesn't entertain me. All of my friends are crazy about it. To me, gaming is fun because of the social interaction that goes on, and Guitar Hero is just silence and "nice". It also isn't mentally challenging and you can sort of zone out.
