Robert Downey Jr. asks Hollywood to forgive Mel Gibson

I'll never forgive him, because he sucks in every way. The biggoted crap is just the beginning

Thank you, I feel the same way. And not because my mother is Jewish. But because any man that abuses a woman is a NON-MAN IN MY EYE'S. Big deal he's an actor, doesn't make him any less of a coward scumbag. For anyone that feels He deserves another chance, I remind you to listen once more to the phone calls, and his threats to his girl. I'm sick and tired of the way these celebrities get away with murder, then cry when they get shunned a bit. It's really pathetic people can actually get all choked up when two very good actors play out a scene at an award show. Nothing more than an impromptu act.

The substance abuse is one thing- one Downey can obviously relate to, and it's commendable Gibson hired Downey when nobody else would.

But being an ugly, racist, sexist bigot is a whoooole 'nother issue, Mel.

I've never listened to the tapes and I never will. When I look at Mel, I see a broken man like the rest of this goddamn race we call men, and I don't need to see any more than that to feel empathy. Forgiveness isn't about accepting or condoning the actions of the guilty, but showing grace regardless.

It's easy to show a hard heart, to say "This man crossed a line I've drawn in the sand, and therefore should be hated." But to what end? Grace is worthless, absolutely f..king worthless, if only shown to those to whom it's easy to show.

The people who need grace never deserve it, that's why it's such an amazing thing to give.

I agree.

I have no love in my heart for racist who hide it or those out in the open about it but I can forgive anyone who is trying to do better.
Glass houses...

Totally agree with Michael. I read something once. Can't remember it exactly, but it went something like, "Mercy is the sweet scent of the rose lingering upon the heel that crushed it."

We are all flawed. Those who cannot forgive have the worst flaw of all, in my opinion. God bless Downey and Gibson. And all of us.

I, for one, will never forgive him.

And by him, I mean he of the flash-in-the-pan-popularity variety who convinced a below-average director* to fire one of the biggest/greatest movie stars of all time (not to mention one of the screen's most consistent filmmakers).

This was a character defamation barrage assault that started with The Passion of the Christ.
Plain and simple.
Frankly, I'm surprised so many have supported these baseless series of attacks...

I don't think anyone here stated support for the attack. Only forgiveness and compassion. "There but for the grace of God go I." That kind of thing.

Those who will not forgive should not expect to be forgiven for their own flaws and transgressions. That would make for a very sad world indeed, IMHO.

he's defending Mel Gibson

Ah. I see. Not being knowledgeable about the movie "Hangover II" or Gibson's career in general, I didn't get that. I wish people would speak less vaguely.

Even so, my point remains the same -- those who refuse to forgive will not receive forgiveness. And there's not a person on Earth who doesn't need forgiveness.

I think it's a nice gesture on Downey's part but not likely to sway anyone's opinion on the matter. People are going to forgive who they want to forgive. While I personally don't condone a lot of Mel's actions, I really don't care all that much. If he makes a good movie, I'd still watch it.
