Rob Schneider upset with the Mel

I wouldn't disagree with that for an instant. We are all products of our culture (and it's infinite universe of images and messages) and this culture isn't exactly lacking in racism. Add to that personal insecurities and the need to feel "better" than others, and racism/sexism/homophobia, etc. are inevitable. I think most of us are very uncomfortable dealing with that aspect of ourselves and our culture which is why people prefer to candy coat obvious instances of bigotry rising to the surface.

Dustin Diamond (Screech) from Save by the Bell also anounced that he is too not wanting to be in any Gibson's movies. :)

Rob Schneider wont ever work with Mel.

Is that a fact.

Mel is a stud. So he got drunk; big deal. Dude was man enough to step forward and publicly apologize ........

Pfffttt. Rob is a hack anyway. I guess we'll never get to see Passion of the Gigolo.

i've been drunk before, many times. i've been angry and drunk. but i never launched into hateful non-sequiturs about an entire race of people. to shrug this off as "the alcohol talking" is beyond my ability for reason. having read the original police report, its clear to me that these were deep-seeded thoughts he carries around with him. this stuff is on his mind. it didn't come from nowhere.

OOOOH!!! Look! the top echelon of hollywood is out in force against Mel...Rob S and Dustin Diamond! HA HA
Mel better look out

how come everything being reported about who's coming out against him. Jodi Foster and producer Dean Devlin have come out to Mel's defense.

Some Hollywood Friends Back Mel Gibson

Fri Aug 04, 4:37 PM ET

Several of Mel Gibson's friends say he's a "different person" when he's drinking, but they do not believe he's anti-Semitic.

Movie producer Dean Devlin said he and his wife are Jewish, and he considers Gibson who unleashed an anti-Jewish tirade when arrested for drunken driving July 28 one of his best friends in Hollywood.

"If Mel is an anti-Semite, then he spends a lot of time with us, which makes no sense," Devlin told the Los Angeles Times. He met Gibson while co-producing "The Patriot," in which Gibson starred. "But he is an alcoholic, and while that makes no excuse for what he said, because there is no excuse, I believe it was the disease speaking, not the man."

Jodie Foster said she does not believe that drunkenness excuses hurtful remarks, but doubts claims that Gibson is prejudiced against Jews.

"Is he an anti-Semite? Absolutely not," Foster told the newspaper for a story in Friday's editions. "But it's no secret that he has always fought a terrible battle with alcoholism."

Though it was widely believed that Gibson has been sober since the early '90s, some people close to him say he has been on and off the wagon for years.

"I have been with Mel when he has fallen off, and he becomes a completely different person," Devlin said. "It is pretty horrifying."

Gibson was charged this week with two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Foster, who co-starred with Gibson in "Maverick," said she believed he will recover from his latest fall.

Gibson "was a shining example of how low you can go when you are young and still pull yourself up," she said. "He took his recovery very seriously, which is why I know he is strong enough to get through this now."

why isnt that getting as much attention? i know why cause everyone wants to report how bad the man is and if they show that people have come out to help him it makes him look better than what they want him to look.

Reading Rob Schneiders' comments in the OP, it seems to me just to be an *attempt* at being funny.

Just about as funny as his movies! ;-)

I think he peaked with "Mel . . . the Mel-a-nator" etc.

Yeah, Schneider is a laugh riot. "Let me get some free publicity off a guys alcoholism"... Not surprising coming from Deuce Bigelow.

Now, if Steven Spielberg came out and said he'd never work with Mel again, then it might be press worthy.

I think there are enough things in the mix for "issues" with Jews to be on his mind, perhaps even obsessively.
A) father was an anti-semite. That's gotta be hard to resolve, especially in a liberal industry.
B) he got slammed and had conflict with "the jews" over "the passion", something that may weigh heavily on him. I wouldn't want people thinking I was an antisemite or hated group of people, even if there were some merit to their claims. The net profit of The Passion of Christ might be little conciliation to a guy who doesn't need anymore money.

So he's had two big developmental events that may have been weighing on him at the time and were there under the surface ready to come out.

Question is. Would he hire, work with, allow one of his children to date or marry a Jewish person, do CPR on a Jewish person who needed it, or throw a glass of water on a Jewish person if they were on fire. If no, then of course he's an anti-semite. If yes then he's confused.

As someone who had a career in theatre and was struggling to get work as a director, it's not inconceivable that I might rail against minorities in a drunken stupor. Hollywood is about the new next best thing (and remakes) and theatre is about the way it's always been done and political correctness. So it's virtually impossible for a young white man to get a gig at a major theatre as a director. Those jobs go to 60 year old white men who've been working with that theatre or in that region for 30 years or young minorities. The minorities are hired, rightly, to offset the abundance of white males and because theatre is non-profit and needs this diversity for grants etc. and diversity is often a part of their mission statement. Most of the minorities that get these gigs are more than deserving, but there are not enough jobs to begin with. Less than a fraction of 1% make their living year round in theatre. So I'm pissed that I spent all this time and money pursuing a career that's basically a unicorn (a myth) and that the few jobs that are out there are influenced by factors other than the work. I've never wound up ranting anything racist in a drunken fit, but it's not outside the realm of possibility.

But there's not a race or creed of person that I consider less than me or that I wouldn't hire, work with, allow to marry my hypothetical duaghter, do CPR on, or throw a glass of water on if they were on fire. And still it's conceivable that I would say something stupid while endulging bitterness and bourbon.

So yes it's conceivable that he is not an antisemite, but bittter and confused, and yes of course it's possible that he's a raging rascist.

It's also possible that even he doesn't know which of those two either or categories describes himself best.

There's bigotry everywhere. In LA or Cali there's so much anti-mexico
it's not even funny. No one cummunity or person is better than the next no matter how much of a past they have, good or bad. Lets face it, how many of those hollywood types have said things about blacks.

Digressing, Mel is highly backed by Christians which we know control the politics of this country, among other things. He isn't going anywhere except to make more money, more money, more money. Holllywood is about making coins, bottom line, history has proven that.

Living in the US is at times living in a microcosm. What occurs here won't hold a grain of salt somewhere else whether in Japan or Australia or euro.

Back to Schnieder for him to pay 50,000 for an ad in Varietry is a self-directed move to be noticed. Foolish at that.

He was pretty obnoxious only to be blowing a .12 -- what is that, 4 shots?
Actually, .12 is "in your cups." :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) If he blew .12, he'd definitely had a few.

Okay, Jack. I'm going to say this once and then let it die. Don't know what your theatre directing is like but you got the chops to do a movie. You need to do TWO things. Grow a thicker skin, because you take some of the criticism way too personal. You have done a great job on your three entrants into the DVX fests but it's time to move to something bigger. From everything I gather, there's quite a community for filmmaking where you're at. You and the others need to take advantage of that and make a feature. You're up to it. You may not believe that, but you are. So what's stopping you?

Arn't all of us glad that our drunk ravings don't make it on the news??

EXACTLY! The media, whether left or right, ALWAYS examines EVERY part of public figure's lives.

What if some dude from LA got drunk and said those aweful things about the Jews? The media wouldn't report a damn thing. Plus, wouldn't (shouldn't) the Jewish community be just as upset at that as they would be at Mel Gibson?
