risky job

I did a job for this person before (which is still not done) She is very nice but very un professional. I did a wedding for her and she fell of the face of the earth when it came time to pay me. I mailed her the DVD and she wanted to come to my studio and edit it with me. She said she would pay me extra. I got preoccupied with some other stuff and never really got around to it but was planning on it soon. Now she is approaching me with another job. Money is good but I find it hard to trust this person. She seems to make things way to complicated. Let me know if you think I should take the gig or not.

Don't walk away, run!

Life is too short to deal with people like this, especially when you don't have to contractually.

just say no. why is it that the gigs that pay peanuts are the most grueling and the ones that pay a fortune are a breeze?

well I am going to be payed well over my usual rates for this gig. I think I might just go for it. Any tips on how to not get screwed over. I told her to have my other 50% owed from the last job and the first 50% for this job at the door before I even bring my cameras in the building.

Payed in full before deliverying anything. I agree with purdrifting & zak... every notice how your gut tells you that your gonna get boned before you actually do? Listen to your inner critic!

MikeyP is right though. NEVER ever give the final copy over until you are paid in full. If you do, what's their hurry to pay you? They got what they wanted.

As to your question about how not to get screwed again, if you are going to do it, have a contract. Tell her you wont even begin the discussion until you get your last job payed off in full. Then take a 50% deposit on the new project and do not give her the master until you are paid 100%. Put that all in the contract and if she is not willing to abide by those terms than walk away. Really that should be your general practice anyway, and with this particular person you have even more reason to do so.

Good luck!!! Let us know how it goes.

When I shoot for people this is how I do it, I don't know why other people don't. I also agree with no final copy until paid in full.

I don't think there should be any issue at all with her paying the full amount up front since her character is the one that has been tarnished.

Of course, you already let her off the hook by telling her 50%, so...

I'd say just do it. Just don't hand over the footage until you get paid.

she still hasnt paid you the last 50% of the job before and you fall into the next trap?

I agree with puredrifting
