I like both Die Antwoord and Lady Gaga. Some of Gaga's outfits in the past looked very artistic, original. Some of them look contrived, thrown together for the sake of being unusual not for the sake of truly expressing something. But that's just a subjective opinion. Who knows?
I think it's hard to maintain your creativity as an artist as you become successful. Part of art is the human expression of pain, of rejection, the struggle to be understood, accepted, to communicate your feelings, to be yourself in a world that wants you to conform.
But once you're a millionaire, all those struggles disappear. What pain? Eating caviar and drinking champagne and flying off to Paris doesn't seem like such a hard life. Not fit in? Everyone you meet is dying to tell you how awesome you are because they want a piece of you now. In that environment it's hard to maintain the motivation that made you create art in the first place.
I didn't particularly care for a lot of Gaga's latest album, but she's been releasing music at a very fast pace. Not everything an artist does is going to be awesome.
One thing I've noticed about super duper stars is that, just like any artform but especially music, it all comes down to the music. If you can't shell out hit after hit then no matter what you do, it doesn't matter. A good example is Michael Jackson in his late career. He was still a huge star, but when he released an album with no hits he started blaming Sony and calling them racist and so on. I think if Gaga had hits with this album, everything would be business as usual. And when I say hits, I'm talking about popular singles that is played all over the radio and so on. Just because you as an individual may like a song doesn't mean its a hit. Does anyone has the formula to keep making a hit album and a hit record time and time and time again? I don't know but she'll be right back to the top if she is able to come out with some hits on her next album.
As history has proven over and over again, if you base your fame on being weird, in a few years you will no longer be relevant. Taste in weirdness changes all the time. Talent and the ability to move with the times are the only things that keeps an artist relevant for a long period of time.
Rise and Fall of Lady Gaga. That's one way of looking at it.
Another is to look at her achievements as an entertainer.
The positive side I mean. I personally don't look at my past achievements as anything less than achievements.
(Although one person said to me, "Yeah, but what have you done lately?" I mean, sure, keep the pace up buddy!)
Btw, she was pretty funny on SNL a few months ago.
