ripple edit doesn't ripple?

Sometimes when I try to use the ripple edit tool, the edit does not ripple throughout the remainder of the clips. It just changes the length of the original clip. And then I have to manually move the other clips. Has anyone else seen this effect in Adobe Premiere? I am using CS 3. This is usually when I am shortening a clip. Thanks for your help.

Ripple Edit is a "space /gap" removal function not usually used in conjunction with shortening a clip.

How are you doing this?

Perhaps I misread things then, because I thought that the way that ripple edit worked was that the effects of your edit "ripple" through the timeline -- whether it was lengthening or shortening a clip. That is to say, if I lengthen the clip -- and then all of the other clips further down the timeline get pushed out. And if I shortened the clip -- then all of the other clips further down the timeline get pulled in (i.e. to the left). But it sounds like that is not how it works? I will go back and reread about the function of ripple edit. Thank you.

CTRL-Drag on the end of a clip is one way of doing what you want.

Drag by itself will leave a gap.
