Ripping my Hair out for this stupid effect

wow.

It looks like a complex combination of 3D presets or 3D layer settings and animation presets applied to individual layers with some blending and masking to make the layers connect seemlessly.

I don't think I would know where to begin to make something look as good as that.

I bet he did a lot of work on this!

ha thanks for the kind words Cap'n :)

While the article says he used AE for it all, it does have a very 3D quality to it (at least the bag in the beginning). You could easily pull this look off with Cinema4D and a toon shader. Now to go from scene to scene though, you basically need to just create each scene as its own comp, then include the next comp (say scene 2) inside scene 1 somewhere, and time it so it starts playing right as you fly your camera at it (like he did on the grocery bag). Then you're into scene 2 full screen, and you plant scene 3 somewhere inside the scene 2 comp. I know it may sound confusing and i'm not explaining it clearly i'm sure, but I hope this helps a bit!

ps: Cap'n, i've been throwing around some ideas for some tutorials or maybe even a dvd, but i've just been so swamped lately. I'll get to it though! :)

Thanks Kai

I get the idea now,

btw, when you mean flyby, you mean 3d camera right? I am guessing from some of your works (triple play example) you workspace is much bigger than you canvas?

great work by the way, you are a GURU

Yes -- that's one of the great things about AE... you build your world much bigger than you'll see it thru the camera layer.

This was not done solely in AE. The beginning (and end) as Kai noted, is a 3D render. AE is prety good, but that object is casting shadows on itself and exposing portions of the object in a way that you cannot get without the depth of a truly 3D object. The first and last parts are definatly 3D.

the rest is just objects in 3D space in AE, and probably vectored art as well to make things simple.

Really great work though. I liked the rain.
