Ripped paper look

How do I make a clip look like I ripped it out of the paper or something? I am working on a piece where I need to have newspaper articles on the screen and thought it might look cool if I made it look like it was ripped rather than have nice edges.

Kinda depends what you have in mind, Motion would be a the better choice to do something like this. One way would be to scan in a piece of torn paper and use it as a luminance key over footage. Here's another way to do it with Photoshop, then you'd use this as an image mask:

I would use After Effects.

Rip the articles out of the paper, scan and insert them into a 3D space. You can move a virtual camera around in there with keyframes and what not and end up with quite a dynamic effect.

Do a search on creating a 3d picture in after effects on Google. It'll give you the basic principles to adapt to what you want to achieve.

If you don't want to do it in post, I have put the camera on a tripod in a first person POV and actually flicked through the paper/photo's before and brought things of interest right up close to the camera. I like that real, organic approach sometimes too.

Hope this helped. . .

Dont remember what it's called but there is an effect that does that in after effects. if not, i would do the work in photoshop then work with it in fcp.
