RIP Silicon Graphics

Well, it's happened, Silicon Graphics filed for bankruptcy protection yesterday. Heard it on the radio on the drive home, but I couldn't find any links. If anyone does, post 'em here.

Yeah... this is the 3rd or 4th time Silicon Graphics has filed for bankruptsy over the past few years. They're down, but certainly not out, so don't go writing your eulogy yet.

Their problem is that they don't know who they're making products for anymore. Computers now-a-days are so fast, less and less industries find it necesary to use 'super computers'. I heard that they are restructuring in order to targer two industries, medical and animation/ post production houses.

Understandble, I didn't mean it to come off as an eulogy, but it is foreboding. I don't know about medical, but in animation/post work, Linux has taken over so rapidly running on off the shelf hardware, it's going to be hard for SGI to make a dent.

Yes the wicked witch is dead.

SGI is trying to spin this as a re-org, but I was talking to some friends that still work their at NAB and they had no clue what SGI was going to do.

In the entertainment industry they appear to be positioning themselves as a storage solutions company, I doubt that's going to work for them in this space. Also, they didn't file chapter 11 becuase they wanted to, their creditors forced them, so I'm sure they trapped as much debt into the segment of thier market they care the least about, entertainment, thier GSA government stuff is not effected by this.

So although SGI won't actually be out of business their effectiveness in the entertainment industry is all but over. Which is unfortunate because there isn't a PC or Mac on the planet that can come close to doing anything an SGI can do.

Maybe Thomson or Autodesk will buy them...
