Just curious if any of your guys have used an LED Ring light set-up?

I'd like to hear your user benifets and draw backs aswell as which brands you have used and trust.

Thanks guys.

Looks good, Morten.

So you used inly the camera light and incidentals? did you have to balance it for tungsten, or whatever?

It sure looked nice and evenly lit on the faces...just not a whole lot of separation from the background, but still looked real good.

DVX, I presume?

most of the stuff we do is in extremely difficult lighting conditions like the floor of a mall, a bar during daytime or a hair salon. nightmarish. we usually use a couple of lights - a soft box and a key - plus the ring. it's tungsten balanced and we use filters for daylight and fluorescents. due to the extremely hectic shooting schedules we usually only have about 5-10 minutes for setup which means there's no time for proper lighting. we just block out windows as best we can, light the subject and shoot

and yes, ofcourse it's DVX.

our camera rig now looks like Frankenstein's Monster. I'll post the pictures when I have time to take some.

to answer your questions rook:

benefits:
- fantastic lighting even in close situations
- the light works very well for detail shots and helps you bleed out unwanted shadows
- excellent as an overall soft fill
- everyone looks like a million bucks with this light

drawbacks:
- extremely unforgiving light. blemishes and bad makeup shows up really well
- the light is fairly "flat" so you have to work with other lights to create depth - and that takes time
- compared to a sun-gun the light is weaker. it is a soft light so it doesn't throw as far which means it won't work in some situations
- tricky when using a battery. it's hmi so it really doesn't pull much power but it needs a lot of boost to strike so you need a strong battery
- reflection is a *****
- you have to use a ballast which ads on extra weight on the camera

but like I said, I love the light. we use it on almost every shoot.

morten,

Thanks dude, the shots look good. That light looks great. And thank you for the feedback.

Thanks.

I've been looking into dimable LED ring lights.

Anyone tried a dimable LED ringlight?
