Rights To Using Quotes?

Suppose I would like to include a quote of a french author from the 1600's at the beginning of my film (in title form). Are you allowed to include these as long as you cite who said/wrote it or are there legalities involved here?
 
Haha, yeah that's what I was thinking. But do you think it would be different if it was a modern quote?
 
It depends on who and what it is. For instance, you can't use MLK's "I have a dream..." quote as it is owned by the King family (trust?).
