Hey guys. If I 'firewired' my camera right into my laptop, had FCP running with the capture window open. capturing, and saving this footage to an external, would it work??

Yes, it will work. I have done this a number of times using a 1.5 Ghz G4 PowerBook with 1 GB of RAM, which is not much horsepower by current standards. There are a number of threads describing this "capture now" option, which a search should uncover.

If you are trying to Capture DVCProHD make sure you have at least a firewire 800 external drive. It will fill quickly, and the internal drive on mine has some trouble with dropping frames when I capture HD this way. I capture out to an eSATA drive when i do DVCProHD since i do not have a firewire 800 port, it works well for me.
