Rig Holder...what is this called?

Yeah, the picture sucks. Sorry.

It looks like it works like the fig rig but it doesn't go all the way around like a steering wheel.

I'll try to post a better pic.

Dakotapod, hey man I'm trying here.

It's not like they did a "rig breakdown" in the DVD extras with lots of studio lights and beautiful framing. These frames were the best I could pull out to illustrate.

Please be helpful.

Can you really not see what the device is doing? Like themacb said it is something similar to the fig rig but different.

The pictures aren't great but you can still see what's going on.

Anyone else?

You need to crop the pictures before you post them... it looks like a 2.35 frame that's being squished to appear as a square pic.

Still I can see what's going on. I've seen this thread and breezed over it in the last few days. I'm glad I clicked on it. That is definitely NOT a figrig or even anything close to it. Somebody MADE this or they bought it at a really small shop that makes these.

The function is still the same... to stabilize human imperfection by pulling the center of gravity off the cam. Honestly it looks like thier design would be WAY improved by moving the side arms farther away from the cam.

I've been wanting to put something like this together and offer it up for the DVXuser members for quite a while. I need to stop procrastinating and just do it.

I use a Bogen Magic Arm for this same function when it's all I have in my bag and some handheld shots come up.

I lock the arm at a 90 degree angle with a camera plate under the cam (it's $14 from B&H and you'll see it on the same search page if you click HERE and if you face it the right way and use the correct arm for the verticle then the locking arm makes a nice angle that fits right into your left forearm. This works really good and smooths out shots massively. The best part is that the magic arm has so many other functions that are totally non-related to this.

I also have this right here.

Nevermind the fact that it's pictured with a still cam. It works great as a cam bracket under the DVX. It's small, light, and cheap... Oh and it's pretty good at smoothing out the motion. It's at least a 100% improvement over shooting purely handheld.

If you care to get one then you can click HERE But I still want to stress that the magic arm combo gives better results because of the wider plane of stability.

There are other options to consider as well. Just type in "camera bracket" and you'll see choices like the Mighty WonderCam Mini-Rover... which is an over-the-top name for something just like the Stratos Bracket.

The reason I've procrastinated building these things is because they're pretty cheap already! I think the ideal setup would be one with the width of the magic arm and something like the little locking arm of the magic arm outcropping from the 90... like it does on the magic arm. The bracket still must allow you to change focus and aperature at the left side of the cam... which is why those guys made the bracket so tight to the cam... but if it's too close then you're losing a lot of the value of the bracket in the first place! The idea compromise would be a design which allows your forearm to become the left support of the entire rig as it frees your hand to run focus and aperature. Then once the shot is composed it would allow your left hand to move back to a wider grip position.

If anybody knows somebody at Manfrotto or another company that builds stuff like this I'd be happy to just hand over my designs on this thing because I think I could improve on the fig-rig a lot.

If you get a magic arm and set it up how I show you it won't take long before you will have the same revelations about the ideal cam support.

mattinstl, thanks man. That is helpful. I like the idea of using the SLR bracket. That might be the easiest solution. I can grab one of those easily.

I see what you are saying about spreading the bracket away from the cam but I really prefer a smaller set up as I like to steal shots and the bigger the rig the less time before security comes.

Again, I really appreciate the info. Thank you.

Dactotapod, I didn't realize that my photos were being stretched and hard to see in some browsers. They didn't do that on my computer so I assumed you were just giving me a hard time.

Appologies. No hard feelings.

Ya, well a lot of good that does now.... I spent all afternoon crying... Words hurt man, they hurt...

Hi Matt,

Does the SLR bracket have the ability to mount a tripod plate on the bottom? So if you have it on a video camera you can also throw it on a tripod really quickly without having to take the bracket off? Thanks!

Hey, maybe he actually used the search feature, or was just browsing the archives. Gotta give props for that.
