Richard Leacock, Pioneer of the "Cinema Verite" or "Direct Cinema" style of documentary filmmaking has passed. Mr. Leacock is a hero of mine and his films have had a tremendous impact on me. Richard Leacock, along with D.A Pennebaker, Robert Drew and the Maysles' brothers created the Direct Cinema revolution of the 1960's where the use of portable cameras and sound recorders could be taken out into the world and record events as they happen. It is not just a technology advancement that was achieved, but a new language of filmmaking that was born. A language that continues to this day.
I suggest that if anyone whats to see documentary films that are true masterpieces, then I suggest that you watch two of Mr. Leacocks films, "Primary" and “Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment". These films are my two favorite documentaries, and are, IMHO, masterpieces.
Thank you Mister Leacock. You taught us how tell the intimate real stories. RIP.
