Richard Jewel is dead??

He died in August of this year....natural causes. He was forty-four.

I don't know what made me do an internet search for this guy...I was watching the Seinfeld episode where George pretends he is from out of town and Kramer does the Peterman Reality Tour, and a few minutes later, I'm reading the Wikipedia article on him.

Poor guy. Commits heroic act, FBI acts improperly, he gets screwed big time in the press, lambasted on the late night talk shows, sues and settles a bunch of cases, and doesn't get to live long enough to enjoy his vindication. The press had this guy lynched before the FBI even laid charges, which they never ended up doing.

Still...what the hell made me look this guy up? It was just barely 20 minutes ago, and I can't remember for the life of me.

I know what you mean. It's so easy (and profitable) to tear a man down. Especially a hero. The guys face was all over the news when they were making accusations. He was fresh meat and a hot topic. And when they were done with him they tossed him aside, without even an apology or a lesson learned.

When it comes to stories like Richard Jewels, the media has everything to gain (millions in advertising profits) and nothing to lose. But, worst of all, they have no accountability. They can spend weeks covering a story and destorying someone's life. And if they are wrong, just write a 10 second retraction and move on to the next story.

RIP Richard Jewel

I thought the name sounded familiar, but I had to look it up too. And this is what I found about the Atlanta bombing- "A cameraman also died of a heart attack while running to cover the incident."

That sounds about right...

A tragedy. The media destroyed his life with out any care for the truth. I read a report when it happened; The man suffered severe bouts of depression and anxiety attacks. All of that stemmed from the pressure he faced from the media and the poor work of the FBI. In essence they were the cause of his death.

Funny how a guy who had his face all over the news when he was falsely regarded as a lone-bomber type doesn't make the news when he dies.

He saved dozens of lives, helped avert a massive disaster at a major event with a worldwide following, and successfully sued more than one media outlet for damaging his character, yet he doen't register a blip on the media-meter when he dies.

Given the current jingoism in relation to the war on terror, you'd think a guy who helped foil a sizeable terrorist act on American soil, perpetrated by an American, would get some more mention in the American press...

...or was his heroism third rate?

290 hits in the month it has been up...

The Fox news bit was nice, but maybe it was done more to take a shot at the Atlanta newspaper.

Still nowhere near the negative amount of coverage he got for doing a good deed.

Actually, his death did make the news (a little). I heard about it when it happened months ago. I think it was one of the main stories on Yahoo's frontpage. I don't have a tv so it must have been some where on the Internet.

It's good that Yahoo had something. Might switch back to Yahoo as homepage, since Google is kind of boring.

We get plenty of American television spill here, and I never heard anything about it. With all the junk you find on the net, it's still nice to see that it can be used as an outlet for broader ideas and free thought in a time when mainstream media seems so homogenous and controlled for content.

Plus, there's all the porn and gambling....

Re: Richard Jewell: You must not have been watching the news that day, I remember it getting coverage.

The real crime is that I thought this guy ^^ was dead, but I guess he's still alive. He's still alive, right? "Hello Frisco!"
