Rhode Mics.

Is the Rode NT3 or NT5 any good? I have the opportunity to get either one used for around $150. I was thinking of getting the Octava, but I do lots of outdoor shooting, so that probably wouldnt work for me. I need the hypercardroid because I do lots of run and gun, but also scripted things. If you frown upon the Rodes, then link me to an ebay auction or something where i can spend my $200 wisely.

Thanks.

Hey Brandon,

just to give you some feedback on Rode - i was chatting to the audio pro at B&H and he told me a story about a documentary maker who had gone and spent over $500 on a mic. Due to the nature of the project this guy had to bring in some footage from a colleague who shot some stuff at another location.
Anyhow the footage was great - but the audio was so awesome this guy called up the cameraman and asked what the hell he was using........turns out it was a Rode NTG-1 which was half what he had shelled out.

All I am saying you are doing the right thing by researching well because you really need to stop and think what it is you are trying to achieve and if you just throw $$$ at it, it does not mean you are going to have a better product.

I am using a Rode NTG-2 and an Audio Technica lapel mic. for interviews and until I can tell the difference in quality or feel my capability with sound exceeds my mic. I am sticking with that. (I reckon my equipment is only deficient in terms of my knowledge)

uh, brandon, the oktava IS a hypercardioid.

you generally want a shotgun for run and gun, and a hyper AND shotgun for narrative (depending, of course, on locations and content). I dont personally like Rode very much, but I aint gonna go do an Ebay search for you... You know the drill, do a search here - my top 5 shotguns thread sums up the low to high mid end guns, and there are similar threads for hypers.

I use Rode NT5's (which are cardioid patterned...) as my more forgiving mics for use with inexperienced boom ops...they work well, and have a wider pattern. They are not my first choice, but they have been effective and good value for the price (always one of my lead measurements (after sound quality). ;-)

I have the Rode NT3. So far, I've been happy with it. There's a test comparison between the NT3 and other mics in one of the stickied threads, and I posted a link to a comparison between the DVX internal mic and my NT3 I did a couple of months back.

I just got the NTG-1

That same day i was shooting a 2 min video for work, i wired a lav to the guy but frogot to turn that channel on so i was only on the NTG-1 and i didint notice it untill later when i was paking the gear up.

The audio was so clear and crisp in the headphones that i thought the lav was working but it was only using just the NTG-1.

My own comparisons between my DVX & NTG-1 proved that the NTG-1 has better sensitivity for the same gain level than the built in DVX mics. Having said that, the internal mics handle high SPL levels better - particularly during live band shoots.
