Rewatched Pulp Fiction

So I guess Scorsese and every other filmmaker on the planet who uses long tracking shots are ripping off Godard, Huh?

And you must be a Syd Field fan, right? The whole dialogue must advance the plot BS and whatnot. Three act structure. MMMmmmmm.....

So one of your biggest points is that Tarantino ripped off Godard because of his use of long tracking shots?

Thats idiotic. Godard wasn't the first to use them.

How about Hitchcock in 1948. With Rope. The movie is nothing but one long tracking shot.

No... but QT keeps talking about Godard, so what am I supposed to think?

No... but traditional screenwriting rules dictates that characters shouldn't talk more then they have to, not my rules, other people's. that's why Breathless was groundbreaking and Dogs was "considered" as groundbreaking.

appropriate, not ripped off.

look, I like QT alright, geez.....

edit: actually you have made a good point here... so how is Tarantino original again? I'm not addressing you Machinist, just to people who claim that QT is the most original fillmmaker without offering anything to back it up.

Tracking shots are a staple of cinematography this day in age.

Hell, I guess every filmmaker that uses a basic wide two shot and over the shoulder reversals during a conversation are ripping off Orson Welles or whoever the hell invented basic coverage of a scene way back in the silent era.

Right?!

I'm just messing with ya, chromeboy. Its all good.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Are you serious?

This is the basis for your argument ? Tarantino uses dialogue about nothing ? Seinfeld did an entire career about nothing, were they ripping off Godard?

-

They shot on location ?

You cannot be serious !

Long Tracking Shots?

Have you ever even seen a De Palma film or a Carpenter film ? Have you ever heard of the Steadicam ? Boogie Nights ? Goodfellas ? Welles Touch of Evil ? Kubrick ? Antonioni ?

--
Those exaggerated blood squirts in Kill Bill... have you seen ANY modern Japanese movies?

Here is a great article on the many ingredients used for the Kill Bill series:

http://japattack.com/main/?q=node/79 (Beware Masuimi Max)

It is no secret the tribute he paid for Kill Bill. Tarantino is probably the biggest fan of Hong kong cinema there is.

Have I seen Godard ? Who are you talking too ? You think I'm some teenager or young film student ?

-

Let's hear an original opinion from you for once.

No no no

'It doesn't work that way. Don't confuse me me telling you to chill towards others as an excuse for you to start getting froggy towards me.

-

How can one explain that 1 + 1 = 2 to someone who just doesn't get it?

Take a look at what you have to offfer on your last post: Tracking shots, dialgoue, Shooting on Location ....

You need an entire education on cinema chromeboy. Something tells me you havent seen any of his films; maybe one of them ? Who knows.

The screenplay for True Romance? Brilliant. Natural Born Killers ? Brilliant. All of his screenplasy for his directorial works have been wonderful.

I suppose garnering that Oscar for Pulp Fiction (Not too mention the 6 other Oscar Nods) was simply a matter of pulling the wool over everyones eyes?

Pulp Fiction won Cannes.

-

You think simple paying homage or tribute to other works is that simple ? Why dont we all cookie cut it and make some dialogue driven, location shot, tracking heavy films ?

-

This is an argument you're going to be on the short end of unless you start backing up your claims with some substance. Tarantino has the biggest set of balls in Hollywood right now. Name one filmmaker that even compares to what he is doing.

1 + 1 = 2 (If you can't get it; so be it)

Errr--

He's not the most original filmmaker, but those points aren't really doing it for me.

Totally overrated. That just me, though.

LoL. Can't deny that I like Kill Bill 1 and 2...

Or Pulp Fiction... Or just about anything else he's put his fat fingers in.

Maybe I'm just hating on him? Yeah.

John:

Actually, you come across as someone who reads all the articles and reviews about all the movies and regurgitate everything they say here. If you know Godard, then tell me the first thing he said to her in the "New York Harold Tribune!" scene in Breathless (or anything specific from that movie). It's a very simple question. If you know anything about French New Wave you haven't expressed any knowledge of it. People talking about nothing to advance the plot for minutes on end, that's pure Godard, not Seinfeld.

QT is good. All I wanted to say is that he is heavily influenced by International Cinema, an obvious fact that some people here refuse to acknowledge.

You doubt I have seen any of QT's movies, after I gave specific examples of shots and scenes from his various movies. You claim you know Godard and have yet given ANY examples of his work...

So my arguments are not grand slam homeruns, at least I offered something. And at least Machinist offers a counter example to my argument, unlike you... yes everyone uses tracking shots, but again, QT keeps talking about Godard, so what am I supposed to think?

NBK and True Romance are good, yes. Pulp Fiction is a good movie... hey I never said it wasn't.

So why do you think he is original again?

I don't understand why John having seen a french new wave film or not is relevant to the discussion.

If John goes and watches Breathless and afterwards he will realize and come to the conclusion that..." Oh yes, chromeboy was right, Tarantino is ripping off Godard!!"

Me confused.

it is relevant because QT is a huge fan of Godard. How can one claim that QT is an all original filmmaker without even having seen any of Godard's work? That's like saying Led Zeppelin is all original without acquiring some knowledge of the blues.

and the word is APPROPRIATE!!

S'actually a pretty stupid arguement to say someone's ripping another filmmaker off by employing narrative techniques such as long dolly's, everlasting steadicams, or even machine-gun cuts...

I'm not defending John or QT... but it's still pretty retarded. I mean, how are you planning to direct?

Everyone's got their influences.

Tarantino is a fan of Godard; and ....................... ?

I fail to see this as a valid point myself. But I have seen this before.

Actually, you come across as someone who reads all the articles and reviews about all the movies and regurgitate everything they say here.

Dude. Serious. Don't start. It's not going to get you anywhere but out the door. If you want to know where i am coming from, the comment about the others opinions stinking like "insert your hole" is where I am coming from. I recall another reply from you in another thread stating that another poster was 'just about the only person here who actually offers anything worth reading to this thread', and that after umpteen different people had replied. You have not gotten off to a good start, so I'd suggest toning down the bark.

Who said I knew Godard? I have seen Breathless. I don't remember the line one iota. Ohhhh, damn. I guess you got me. Considering I havent seen the film in practically 20 years, I guess you win.

I have seen some French New Wave, some Italian and some other European cinema; I never have and never will profess to be the expert on it But I do one thing:

Just because it is the original, does not make it the best. Pioneering landmark moments in filmmaking is simply that.

I have a handful of Italian Gallo and Kurasawa films on my shelf; can't say I remember everything about them even though I've watched them.

QT is good. All I wanted to say is that he is heavily influenced by International Cinema, an obvious fact that some people here refuse to acknowledge.

But that is not what you said. And who is failing to acknowledge his influences ? Every one and their mother's mother (and QT himself) knows Tarantino is heavily influenced by European, Italian, American and Asian cinema. He is the consumate cinephile. When was this a secret?

You doubt I have seen any of QT's movies, after I gave specific examples of shots and scenes from his various movies. You claim you know Godard and have yet given ANY examples of his work...

I never claimed I knew Godard. I said I have watched Godard. I can't imagine many people over 30 (Who are film fans) that have not seen Breathless? My question of you and QT is based off of your reply about locations and tracking shots. That was just plain silly.

So my arguments are not grand slam homeruns, at least I offered something. And at least Machinist offers a counter example to my argument, unlike you... yes everyone uses tracking shots, but again, QT keeps talking about Godard, so what am I supposed to think?

Your arguments thus far are strikeouts. I am not the one who needs to explain anything so don't paint me into the corner you have gotten yourself.

So why do you think he is original again?

It's 1 + 1. I need not explain it if you don't already get it. It's from his choice of Mis-en-scene to his choice of score (and song) to his characters lines. From his use of anime to tell an entire sequence (Oh-Ren) to using black and white as flashbacks. From using mulitple time/location transitions for Mr. Orange's monlogue) to the use of K-Billy Radio, to made up product's (Fruitbrute, Big Kahuna, Red Apple), the constant resurgent of the Vega's, the song and dance of the ear scene (Stuck in the middle), the way Jackson offs Tucker in Jackie Brown (This is one long shot), the entire chapter based on Scorseses monologue ...

What the helll... I can literally start from TR and make my way to KB2. There are so many wonderfully epic great bitchen things about his films, from his direction to his writing

Not too mention the man writes the best (Most original) dialogue than anyone in the poo pooing history of this industry (subjective) ...

Here's the deal. Tarantino films are events. NO other filmmaker can claim that.

How old are you (a serious question) ?

And I almost forgot

Actually, you come across as someone who reads all the articles and reviews about all the movies and regurgitate everything they say here.

Yeah. That's me. Everyone here knows that.

what took you so long to say these words? now this is the kinda stuff i was trying to get out of you....

Thank you.. if you have more, do go on.

I'd rather you just ask me what I thought about specific scenes or events in his films than recap the entire history of Questin Tarantino films.

Hopefully we can come to an understanding. Tarantino is a god in my eyes; where he got his infleunce is great but does not make it greater.

IMO

I've seen Breathless at least 6 or 7 times and even I can't tell you what he first said to her. Big deal.

I thought it was just me. There are few films I can do that with:

Star Wars, Raiders, Platoon (too name a few)

that's cool man... I agree.

I think Richard Gere says something like, "What up?"

Anyway, these QT discussions are always funny--especially when someone uses Godard's "Breathless" as the backbone of their attack. Give me a break.

QT is not a thief. Directors like QT and Goddard aren't making films in a bubble. They are influenced by their contemporaries and I think it's interesting how QT/Other Filmmakers incorporate these influences into their films.

Speaking of the Gere version of "Breathless"...if you haven't seen it, you should definitely check out the film that made the director of the re-make, Jim McBride, famous.
