Rewatched Pulp Fiction

I'm a big fan of the Kill Bills. I'd watched every one of Tarantino's movie up until then. I just wasn't a big fan. It's not that I didn't like them. It was more of a neutral feeling.

I watched Pulp Fiction again the other night. I liked it so much better than before. When I first saw it; I was in my early teens. I didn't quite appreciate certain things at that age. It was probably immaturity, and/or innocence that removed me from that reality. Now with more life experience under my belt, PF speaks to me. I respect the process a lot more and understand the nuance.

I still like the Kill Bills more. They're just beautiful when it comes to cinematography. The story seems much larger and deeper. Yet even with that they also seem to be a lot more alive and fun. Some could argue that's the problem in relation to QT. Many people love Tarantino's more intimate conversation between characters, and close quarter environments.

the only thing i like about kill bill the the cinematography, they look amazing. Otherwise i can barely stand them. IMHO! :)

I'm actually kinda over PF, but that's just because i"ve seen it maybe more than any other movie, well, maybe not but i've seen it a LOT. I just can't get the enthusiasm to sit through it again. Oh well maybe in a couple years

I never thought of it like that. I guess that would make Speilberg the genre of new age huh? In War of the Worlds I saw him sampling some ideas from Hitchcock. A new age artist bounces of off classical ideas but adds a modern twist to it. I don't mind. I loved it.

There's really no sense in trying to reinvent the wheel. Take some existing wheels and make a hotrod! Almost everything is derivative in some way or another. At least Tarantino is open about it instead of trying to cover his sources in an effort to try and seem deep and pretentious.

personally, i don't have a problem with Tarantino making direct "lifts" from other movies. but i remember alot was made of it at the time, where Tarantino denied having ever seen City on Fire prior to making Reservoir Dogs. and he pressured high profile festivals not to show "Youre Not Fooling Anyone".

Enough of Dogs and City on Fire..... please.

Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Kill Bill 1 and 2 are testaments to the mans skill and vision.

I've explored the City on Fire site and who cares; so he used some ideas from an obscure film as a background story to his heist in Dogs ?

You think the entire entire plot of "Reservoir Dogs" is lifted from the last twenty minutes of City on Fire ? We never even see the vast majority of this 20 Minutes, but 'hear about it' as told by Keitel's Mr White.

-

Incidentally, I thought it was genius when he used the monologue from American Boy as an element in Pulp Fiction. One of the mosre memorable scenes in Motion Picture history. Keitel using Chow Yun Fat's double gun firing ? Fat's been doing that his entire career.

I am always amazed at peoples disdain for QT. Dude is the best thing in motion pictures happening right now. Name 2 films that can be more intensely anticipated than Inglorious Bastards or Grind House. What, Superman Returns from Bryan Singer ? X-Men ? The Break-Up ? A new Star Wars film ?

Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffftttttttttttttttttttttttt.

There is so much truth in this that Scorsese and Ringo are lining up to sue Tarantino; oh no wait. This report came out 10 years ago, they must have forgotten.

We always hear QT lifts or QT pays homage; who doesn't?

yeah, i think he does amazing work. very akin to hip hop. he samples other movies and puts his own rap over it.

i was just disputing that he was "open" about it.

personally, i will skip Grindhouse. I think Rodriguez, despite everything he's done for the independent filmmaker, sucks balls. hard.

ps- i love that bukowski quote. i kept it on the front page of a script i wrote for inspiration.

I'm not particularly a fan of RR's movies, either. I like a few and don't like others. What I am a fan of is what he has done to advance indie filmmaking; how he has helped make it more accessable to many of us on this board.

Well you're my new best friend. You should call up Mr. RR and see if he needs help making Sin City 2 or 3 for me. :)

I'm with you on this. I love his spirit and attitude towards indiependent filmmaking. He is a true inspiration but his filmmaking talent leaves alot to be desired. I find him competent but not a god amongst the gods (Spielberg, Scorsese, Tarantino ... )

Even thought his films are not memorable, Sin City, I believe, is his best work to date and ironically directly homaged to the graphic novel itself in complete execution. Cool foresight for him to shoot it that way; I wonder how many directors would have chosen to do it this way ?

Grindhouse is gonna be fun though
