I started the thread above and got great advice and help ( especially from Jeff Markham who assisted me in post and end analysis)

Job was very succesful and the young pianist went on to big and better things.

Now I need to film her again.

Need a little further advice.

Last time I used 2 mics (see set up in pix below) effectively recording left and right end of the piano on 2 discrete audio channels. ( faux stereo)

Jeff fixed it beautifully in post but I am now wondering if I should not be recording discrete channels. ( true stereo) ?

Thoughts.

Note: I am stll an audio klutz so dont confuse me please. :dankk2:

If it's a classical piano recital on a grand piano.

I would use a pair of SDC omnis at about 20cm spacing at about ear height about 2m from the piano in a good acoustic.

Play with the exact positioning according to the piano, room, pianist and work recorded - but the above would be my starting position.

I hope this helps.

(Oh - and I specialise in recording piano)

Thanx John

Mic wise...I have the two mics pictured and they did a really good job last time. Especially considering my inexperience but audio guys told me it sounded great and as I said...Jeff M did some post on the audio and made it very pro.

My real question is around the situation that I ended up with 2 discrete audio channels because of my recording set up thru a field mixer into 2 audio tracks on the camera.

One from each mic so a definite left and right "mono" feel. (Stereo mono)
I think Jeff must have panned them into each other for a true stereo track..

Should I do this differently?

My method is as posted above with one in the left channel and the other in the right.

This is how I record solo piano CDs.

If you are in Auckland, see if you can get in touch with Larry Elliott, and expert in audio in NZ.

Thanx John.

Now I have to work out how to mix that in audio post...although I will probably pass it off to an audio expert.

I am a mere D.P (cameraman) andall audio is a black and mysterious art as far as I am concerned
