Review of lower end shotguns.

with r the money you put on thaat (me-66 +k-6) yopu can get 4073 from at - miles away better

Yea I was surprised at that. They picked the the Sennheiser and put it up against the 835. They could have done the 4073, or at least the 897. I understand that the sennheiser is a "system", hence the higher price, but if you are talking about cash being the mitigating factor...

Take a look at the date of this review. It's 4 years old! the 897 didn't exist then, and the 4073 is above the price line for this article.

Azden, LOL!

Four years ago the 4073a was nearly $700. That mic was originally intended to compete with the mkh416 and other mics in the upper class. I've said this a dozen times... but back then the me66 was about $350... Well now the me66 is $450 and the 4073a is $530...

To me the answer to this recurring subject of what shotgun to get is a no-brainer... for anybody who doesn't know me Oleg's got the right answer.

If you're going to get a cheaper gun then get the 897.

sound for first short

sound for first short

i am about to shoot a short on dvx100a-- would you advise against recording the sound straight into the camera with a boom (shotgun) mic on a pole and a long cable? what is the cheapest way to record into a separate device?
if i do go straight into the camera, should I go into both channels or just one?

and a separate sound question: how do I do phone voiceover dialogue? I was thinking of just recording it separately and altering it in post.

thank you for the help

well that info is still good. I just ordered an Audio-Technica AT835b from B & H last night before reading that... now i feel a little more satisfied.

I've always gone directly to the camera. If you are only using the one mic, that should be fine. Doing 2 channels is uneccesary. It's mono either way, and you will just get 2 channels of the same thing.

I've never done voiceover, so I can't help you there.

A lot of people put the mic in Channel 2 and set Channel 1's source to Channel 2 also. Then set the gain on one to -50 and the other to -60 (or adjust the levels with the little knobs...but that can be a pain if you're changing often).

This will give you some room in case you get blown out at some point. The lower channel might be useable.

I guess it depends on the mic. I could see doing that (60db) with my ATR55, but not the AT897. But I guess it foesn't hurt to have back up. OF course it might make monitoring a liitle more difficult.

Matt, you mean my precious 500 dollar 4073 was 700 dollars?
and was made to compete against high end mkh416?
no wonder it kicks ass,
my precious~

Yeah, original retail on the 4073a was around $850... Of course nobody actually sold any of them at that... but the general idea with the 4073a was for AT to get into the competition of higher end shotguns. I don't know what the set of circumstances was that put these in the price range they are... Like I said if I could choose one or the other (at the same price) then I'd choose the 416 every time... but they aren't the same price.

I sometimes read comment from people about the 4073a being expensive... they don't realize how cheap it is... for what you're getting.
