Review of BluLine 300w Fresnel

Yes I recieved it on friday (6 days, as the webpage shipping calculator said)! and I'm really happy with it! everything screams quality!

The cable is of great quality and and the inline switch looks heavy duty. I also gave a close look to the fresnel lens. I had the light on and I use some contrast viewers to look for chips and bubbles. I found none so I'm pretty happy with the glass. About the light quality, I must say that I liked it. I found no hotspot and the zoom capacity was pretty good (I don't know the opening degree but it looked decent).

Build quality wise I must say that from the barndoors to the focus knob looks nice and, well I haven't thrown it onto the floor. But, I haven't ever done that to any light I've used so.... that's not a problem...

The barndoor fits perfectly and is of great quality with the same surface texture as the arri barndoors have. and the holder switch is also spring loaded and acts in the same way as the arri does. The materials used to in the casing and all the little pieces as the filter holder or the bale block are made of heavy duty materials, no that plastic as you can find in some knock-offs..... And hey it comes with a 7m cable as the Arri's

I'm really happy with this light. I can't really report about it's durability because I've only had it for 3 days, though 3 intense testing days!

I may post some photos later, but i want to wait until I get a good quality bulb (because as I didn't have enough money I could only get a bad Chinese brand 9€ bulb (and I don't know if the cri is good enough)....

If you guys have any question ask and I'll try to answer.

Here is an interesting link with a short review/comparison between different lights including the Cinelight Fresnel 650W.
Link
I have in my arsenal two Cinelight Fresnels 650W and 1000W and one Steven Studio Fresnel 650W (BlueLine) and the quality of Cinelight brand is better than Steven Studio ... better assembly and materials (especially the mirror, barndoors and spigot receiver which is made from metal on Cinelight and not plastic). Also the light output is higher and beam is uniform without dead spot when in flood position as on Steven. Also no problem so far with the bale block. Used them for about two years now - medium use.
Judging by the differences I can say that they are not made in the same factory.

Between this and Inaki's comments there is some good information here. The link to the review is also good.
Inaki, if you feel like the time and effort, would love to see detailed pics of your Cinelight.

Hi Alex,

That is the manufacturer, they also sell it at the same price as Videogrip does, and they have the same availability videogrip does (at least when I checked). Moreover, I got the light shipped from them. The real company is called Cineart S.R.L and manages both the cinelight shop and the videogrip shop. Something like creative video pro that manages both mitcorp shop and cvp shop.

This is the link to the photos, http://www.flickr.com/photos/31310018@N06/sets/72157624152124441/show/with/4701621480/

I'll explain them briefly:
1- Filter holder closed
2- Filter holder opened
3- Front without barndoor
4- Fresnel Lens with the light on (it shows the protection wire mesh)
5- Inside casing (shows the worm gear , the reflectora and the lamp, sorry for the short DOF)
6- Upper vent light spill blocker
7- Focus knob (the knob is made of strong plastic, you can read the knob manufcturer's brand name engraved on the knob)
8- Bale block (heavy duty materials, no crappy plastic that breaks in a heartbeat, the butterfly is made of heavy plastic)
9- Light switch
10- Light bulb on
11- Cable holder
12- Side label (hahaha the first thing I did is put my name on it you know....)<br>13 and 14 show the focus movement range.
15 to 17 show the process of closing and opening the upper side of the cassing to acces the bulb, you press on the casing, it bends a bit, and you unlock it.
18- light spill on side vent
19- lower side spill
20- Front side spill
21- Filter holder, I think that it can fit two scrims, I didn't have any scrim on hand to try it out, but calculating the thickness of the barndoor and the thickness of the scrims I think it can accommodate two or even 3 loosely and may hold 4 if you press. But don't quote me.
22- Left side label
23- Right side label

Hope this is enough, if you need an specific detail please ask.

Wow, great job Inaki. Your pics are great.
Overall quality looks really good.
Just out of curiosity, are any of the vents blocked with casting flash?
Does the stage move smoothly back and forth when adjusting focus, i.e. does one side lift up and down or does it wobble?

Thanks!

Well, it's easier to show you than to tell you, so i made a short video showing the fresnel.
Talking about the focusing, I must say that it has two points where it tips to either side. The first one is when you reach the flood setting, it tips to the right, but it only tips if you over turn it a bit, if you stop before the knob hits its limit it won't tip. The same happens when you are hit the spot setting. But judge by yourself in the video.
Hopefully this video will answer some questions.

Have a nice day!

PD: I don't really know what casting flash is, if you could explain me please, thanks!

Holy smokes, when you answer a question you go all the way--LOL!.
Yeah that tipping when the stage hits the stops is no issue really. It happens because the holes on either side the stage where the guide rods pass through are bigger than the two guide rods. Some fixtures use a spring on the stage against the guide rod to prevent any up and down movement. But again, no issue here.
The reason I ask about it is because I have seen fixtures where the stage would jump up and down as soon as you turn the knob, very annoying and sloppy. I have also seen gross misalignment between reflector, bulb and lens and significant amounts of casting flash or leftover metal inside of the rear vents blocking the passage of air. Casting flash or excess metal spillage is normal from the casting/mold process but most manufacturers take the time to clean that stuff out of the vents so they actually work. From what I can see in your pics and video, everything looks clean, straight and well put together. Looks like pretty good value for the money.
Thanks again for posting this. This is helpful.

:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) I'm on holidays for some days, so i have enough time to do tests. And helping the community that has helped me so much is important for me.

The problem I have right now is that everything is flooded outside, damn rain..... and I can't do any tests outside.

Hopefully the company that sells this sees this post and sends me a free 1200w HMI model to test it out hahahaha

Have a nice day!

Iñaki, thank you so much for taking the time and money to review that light! I'm a student and don't have a lot of money, but I'd like to build a basic 3 light kit. After coming across some Arri knockoffs on Ebay (I've been looking at one branded by Jietu), I've had a difficult time looking for reviews on these lights and your contribution definitely helps!

Please keep us updated on how your light is holding up!

Hi! I must say that I'm really happy with this particular brand, I'm using it a lot and everything is working as expected, no paint chips coming off and not parts coming off.

Have a nice day!

How much is the shipping for the Cinelight Junior Fresnel lights to the United States or does anyone who knows of a site that you can purchase these lights in the United States?

From their FAQ page on cinelightshop.com :

"How can I check the shipping cost ?

Add to cart the product/products you wish to purchase and from the shopping cart page select your country from the drop-down menu and press the update button. Our online shipping estimator will display the shipping cost for your items you wish to order. If no shipping cost is displayed in the table please contact us for a quotation.
"

I see they only use TNT for shipping to US and seams to be pretty expensive.
You can contact them to check if they ship with regular mail service which
is usually cheaper.

Bringing up this old thread again.... need more input from you guys who went ahead and bought these Cinelight fresnels. Are they holding up? Do they perform with quality in spit of their low cost?

I just spotted a guy who has a 1k and a 2k lamp for sale for around 625 dollars still under warranty.

Anything I should look for if I go to check out the lamps... weak spots etc.
Well, you should look for stiffness in the focus gear (does it focus smoothly), and take a look at the ceramic lamp base (is it broken, burnt, ok etc...), also look for cracks in the fresnell lens. And finally check that the mains cable is a quality cable with an inline switch.
