Review My Audio Purchase

So, I have been going through these forums religiously for the past month trying to figure out what exactly I need for our low budget film. We have a DVX100 that we purchased for $1400 in order to have some ability to buy lights and sound equipment. I am looking to scrimp parts of my audio while looking to also make an acceptable package that we can use. I'm putting it out there right now that I am considering using a painter's pole in order to afford the Rycote S300. With that being said I suppose my main question would be is it worth simply going for a softie and forgoe the system for a cheap boompole or is it more economic to wait on the boompole like I plan in order to purchase the S300 system. Also, the Octava will only be used indoors mostly with little movement, which is why a BBG is not included. With that said, here is the list I have made.

That looks good. Don't buy a boom until you can get the 12' cf gitzo or better. This stuff is more important.

You may want to get special foam for the oktava indoors, but you are right, you need bbg and kssm for hard boom swings.

You boing to use the s300 no fur with the oktava? I don't see a shock mount.

It looks great but I would go with the K-Tek Zeppelin so we have matching setups :)

It goes for $300 last time I checked and it comes with a very good mount.

I TOTALLY agree with Sane, who btw always dishes out excellent advice, and I can tell you that being stuck with a boom you don't like is a bad place to be. It will be hard to sell it and the boom is such an important part of your kit that it is TOTALLY worth spending extra cash on. Bad booms will add noise, tire your arms which leads to bad positioning, and leave you too far from your talent... one of the most important thing about sound is POSITIONING of your mic. :)

Good luck man!

BTW, for ADR get yourself a $20 pop filter and you are going to LOVE that MK-012 all over again.

Thanks Roberto!

K-Zepp is also a very good choice! (matter of personal preference)

Ditto on boom advice.

More than well deserved Sane!

If you get the K-Zep you also get the GPS mount which performs much better than the K-SSM. You can pick up a Medium K-Tek Zeppelin (perfect for the 4073a) for $367 at B&H but you might be able to get it a tad cheaper if you shop around. I got mine for $300. :D

Mike I saw you make this argument in another post. I know that the S300 uses a new suspension system, but what makes the K-Tek Zepplin as good as the S300? I've never used any audio equipment except for booming for one of my short projects on a borrowed mic, and the equipment was neither of those. I know their is a debate on everything because of personal preference but could you give me some specifics on why you prefer the S300 or the K-tek Zepplin.

Sorry I won't be of help on this topic, I think both products are very good and there are people who swear by each that I respect and trust. I doubt that most people own both and have directly compared the two. Do some searches or just look at the pictures...

You could go to a dealer and ask to demo both.

Thank you everyone for your help. I appreciate it. I will be going with S300 since I found it for $320 with shipping. Also, I found the AT 4073 for $499. If anyone is interested in the sites that I found quotes for these prices, just ask in this thread. Thanks again.

Would KTEK-K-GPS Supension work with both AT4073A and OKtava MK012A? Do I need to buy a seperate shockmount for OKtava?

Thanks

Yes, barely but yes. I use it on the Oktaba with no problem by using the XLR plug as an extension of the mic. Meaning the rear rubber mount is on the XLR plug. This gives you enough space to use the foam. If you are only using the Zeppelin and don't need the foam then I think you have enough mic by itself but I don't know cause I always use it with the foam for maximum protection.

Yo USLatin,
I would go for the link you gave us: K-TEK Zeppelin with K-GPS suspension $367.50 at B&H. That would be the good choice... corrected?
Thank you very much

If you are asking if that's a good price: It isn't bad. I got lucky really, and at $368 it is still a steal if you consider the performance you get out of it.
