reverse telecine: cinema tools vs. compressor

I'm near the end of a project. shot dvx100a 24p normal. edited in fcp. i'm attempting to smooth out the jaggies. i know that some say this is pointless if your outputting to a ntsc monitor, but i want to enter this piece in some festivals where i believe that that isn't the case.

so, is there a benefit to attempting a reverse telecine in cinema tools going clip by clip rather than running a reverse telecine in compressor of the entire project file?

(i did a test of one clip...reverse telecine in each program, and the results seemed virtually identical. and btw, much smoother than without reverse telecine).

Thanks,
Matthew

i don't think cinema tools can "auto detect" the cadence like compressor can, so i always use compressor for this.

i should add, compressor is also able to auto detect the cadence and reverse telecine footage from the Canon HV20 (which is not flagged). further, it can also adjust for changes in the cadence, in other words, a single clip of media containing multiple shots will not throw off the frames being removed.

Cinema tools can't auto detect the cadence but you should be able to see this just by watching a short clip of the footage. Also, cinema tools can automatically detect changes in cadence in a clip. Personally, I have had better results using cinema tools.

compressor auto detects the changes too. i guess i prefer it because i usually have massive amounts of media that i need to just be able to drop in and convert without worrying if i set it right. in fact, i used compressor to make a little applet that sits on my desktop for the purpose of doing the reverse telecine and transcode to prores hq in one pass.

i've been asked how to reverse telecine footage in compressor. simply turn on frame controls and set the de-interlace drop-down to reverse telecine.
