rev. telecine problems...please help

Hey everyone,

I've recently got my 16mm film telecined and now have the video(miniDV transfered at DVCAM speed). Now, when I try and take it into cinematools and perform a rev. telecine, I can perform it and get 24fps but when I take it into final cut pro it comes out interlaced and the motion is kinda screwy. And then when I rev. telecine to 23.98 I can take it into Final Cut pro but it won't play back on my video monitor and it's interlaced. I have changed my settings in the sequence accordingly, but have no luck. Has anyone had any problems like this and might be able to help. Thanks.

I am not a FCP guru but a few thoughts.

1. After you rev telecine in Cinematools, are you bringing the footage into a 24fps project? If you bring it into a 29.97 project, I would imagine it would redo the pulldown and you would end up with interlaced footage again. When you watch the imported footage can you count 24 frames on the window burn or is there a bunch of "half" numbers from the pulldown?

2. If you are working in 24fps project it will not show up on a NTSC monitor.

Hope that helps

Hey wabbit, as stated above, yes I've changed sequence settings.

Is that true? If I am working with 24fps, it won't show up on the monitor? When I shot stuff with the XL2 it showed up progressive on my monitor(with advanced pulldown removed), though it was a while ago so maybe not.

Stuff shot on video at 23.97 actually has a 29.97 NTSC "wrapper" around it (some others can explain that better). When you use the 24fps project in FCP that is specifically for cutting the film negative, it is actually creating a 24fps (or it might be 23.97, I forget right now) file that should frame for frame match your original film footage. Your NTSC video monitor needs a 29.97 signal. There probably is a way to view it on an HD monitor but I don't know anything about that.

I would suggest skipping the reverse telecine until you have picture lock. I worked on a film that was edited in FCP 24fps setting and it was a nightmare keeping sync throughout audio post. Everything else is set up to expect 29.97. In the end the picture cut still had at least 2 mismatched cuts. The problem was never traced back to the fault of the negative cutter or the FCP cutlist (the cutter fixed it at no additional cost so no one bothered to find a scapegoat) but every project I have worked on with Avid's matchback has had no errors.

At the very least talk to a FCP guru before proceeding.

Cheers

Yeah, I understand that on NTSC tape, you can only get 29.97(which is NTSC) and that shooting 24p with a 2:3:3:2 pulldown flags certain frames when shooting and (the pulldown)needs to be removed while capturing giving 23.976fps. And should be on a 23.98 timeline. But this is just strange. It's giving me a headache...

Next time you probably ought to place it in the FCP forum.

Tried that, abso-positive-o-lutely no response. That's why I post all my technical difficulty problems here, people visit the cafe alot more than any other section.
